  • Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
    Digital Expert-In-Residence
Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Nov 2018 - Nov 2018
    New York, New York, Us
I had the honor of being the first visiting Digital Expert-in-Residence at the foundation’s Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design (for a week in November). It’s an extraordinary venue and showcase for the art collection of the late Doris Duke, with incredible convening power in Hawaii. Yes, the location - on a dramatic hilltop overlooking the North Pacific Ocean - is spectacular, but what will also stay with me is how it’s become a focal point for serious (and fun) cultural programs in Honolulu and beyond. As part of their cultural activities, they have a robust Artist-in-Residence program. They brought me in as they expanded the program. It was a wonderful, humbling experience to work with Konrad Ng, Asad Jafri, Melissa Rand and others, as they set up multiple speaking gigs and workshops for me at leading institutions on Oahu: East-West Center; Hawaii State Art Museum; Hawaii Public Radio and more. Topics included using digital media for non-profit fundraising and social media for artists and creatives. I learned more than I taught and loved every minute of my experience.

I was part of the founding team and helped conceptualize and execute the site. We put together a terrific team of 20+ people (growing to 45+). The site was named one of the six hottest journalism startups of 2010 by BusinessInsider and won its first journalism award (from the nation's oldest press club) within five months of launch. After launch, I mainly wrote a tech column [ http://bit.ly/dnainfosree ] and served as an occasional editorial sounding board. New York, Ny, Us
Since the first time I was a guest on WNYC in 1995 (talking about Indian politics on "On the Media" with Alex Jones; thanks, producer Kavita Menon) I've appeared on the station several times to discuss tech and media issues (and to teach workshops and speak to its diversity outreach group). But there was one time I was on the other side of the microphone, guest-hosting the Brian Lehrer Show. It's one of my favorite shows of any kind and Brian is one of the world's best interviewers, so sitting in his chair was daunting. I like to say that live call-in episode resulted in the most exciting, exhilarating two hours of my life (my wife was not amused to hear that, but I told her that ours being a Nair wedding from Kerala, was much shorter than two hours!). I'll never forget the experience, including taking calls from smart callers around NYC, and will forever be grateful for the opportunity. The guests we had on the show: veteran Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page on Bush administration scandals; former Clinton adviser Sidney Blumenthal and conservative Scott Johnson of Powerline Blog discuss possible Press Secretary successors to Scott McLellan; Don Carnevale of Chronicle of Hight Education on laptops in the classroom; New Yorker writer Caitlin Flanagan, author of "To Hell With All That;" calls from New Yorkers about a looming doormen's strike... Many thanks to Brian and to producers Nuala McGovern and Priya George for making this happen. It was a #LifeHighlight
