Anchor & Executive Producer, "Coping W/ Covid19: A Helpful, Hopeful Call-In Show"
One of my pandemic projects was a #LifeHighlight: Creating, hosting and producing “Coping with Covid19: A Helpful, Hopeful Call-in Show,” which ran on WBAI 99.5 FM, a progressive radio station in NYC, from March 2020 to June 2021. We were on the air for 15 months, 55 episodes and 165 guests. I had the thrill of having my 17yo son, Krishna, serve as associate producer! I wrote about what I learned in my newsletter (see link nearby).
Digital Expert-In-Residence
I had the honor of being the first visiting Digital Expert-in-Residence at the foundation’s Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design (for a week in November). It’s an extraordinary venue and showcase for the art collection of the late Doris Duke, with incredible convening power in Hawaii. Yes, the location - on a dramatic hilltop overlooking the North Pacific Ocean - is spectacular, but what will also stay with me is how it’s become a focal point for serious (and fun) cultural programs in Honolulu and beyond. As part of their cultural activities, they have a robust Artist-in-Residence program. They brought me in as they expanded the program. It was a wonderful, humbling experience to work with Konrad Ng, Asad Jafri, Melissa Rand and others, as they set up multiple speaking gigs and workshops for me at leading institutions on Oahu: East-West Center; Hawaii State Art Museum; Hawaii Public Radio and more. Topics included using digital media for non-profit fundraising and social media for artists and creatives. I learned more than I taught and loved every minute of my experience.
Ratner Distinguished Business Journalism Visiting Professorship
This was a week-long visiting professorship at the Journalism Department at the Weissman School of Arts & Sciences, teaching multiple classes and workshops on digital topics every day. Freelance Writer
I wrote more than 40 stories for various New York Times sections, including regularly contributing the "Taking in the Sites" column when the web was new. My last piece: A social media guide - http://bit.ly/nyt2017
Consultant
I worked one summer with Kevin McKenna (who went on to become NYT Deputy Business Editor) on the planning for NYToday.com site, a NYC guide project. Developed editorial content and supervised small research and reporting staff. This was back when NYTimes.com was in a separate building from NYT HQ on 43rd St (the operations have since combined and HQ is now a couple of blocks south).
Chief Digital Officer
Left this position when CDO role was combined with role of CTO of NYC. - - - - -My hiring press release from August 1, 2016NEW YORK––Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced Sree Sreenivasan as the City’s new Chief Digital Officer. Sreenivasan has served as the first Chief Digital Officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the first Chief Digital Officer of Columbia University, and has also been a mayoral appointee on the Commission on Public Information and Communication (COPIC) since October 2015, where he assisted the public in obtaining access to City information, and helped develop strategies for the use of new communications technologies to improve access to, and distribution of, City data. As CDO, Sreenivasan will work to increase access to City-led technology initiatives, focus on outreach to the tech community, and direct citywide digital policy. He will begin his new role this fall.“To move our city’s digital ecosystem into the 21st century, we need to ensure our city’s resources are at the fingertips of every New Yorker. With Sree Sreenivasan’s wealth of experience, I am confident that he will work to promote transparency, access, and progressive values with our digital tools, helping spread access across the five boroughs,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.“It's a real honor for me to serve as the CDO of the world's greatest city,” said Sree Sreenivasan. “There are so many opportunities to extend the Mayor’s Digital Playbook, collaborate closely across various sectors and help bring more startups here. I will draw on what I've learned working in four critical NYC industries: education, media, arts and culture, and nonprofits, and look forward to building on the great work of my predecessor Jessica Singleton and her predecessor, Rachel Haot."In his new role, Sreenivasan will direct the Office of Digital Strategy to launch digital products that encourage civic engagement, increase government transparency, and support New York City's thriving tech ecosystem.
Mayoral Appointee
The New York City Commission on Public Information and Communication is a City agency, established by the 1989 amendments to the New York City Charter. The Commission is chaired by the Public Advocate, and includes public members as well as representatives of the Mayor, the City Council and a number of city agencies. In addition to publication of the Public Data Directory, the Commission’s responsibilities include education and outreach to assist the public in obtaining access to City information, and developing strategies for the use of new communications technologies to improve access to and distribution of city data. The Mayor appoints two members of the Commission – one of whom, is or has been a representative of the news media. I am one of these two members. Am learning a lot about NYC and city government through COPIC and its meetings.

Guest Host And Producer
Guest Host, Brian Lerer Show
Since the first time I was a guest on WNYC in 1995 (talking about Indian politics on "On the Media" with Alex Jones; thanks, producer Kavita Menon) I've appeared on the station several times to discuss tech and media issues (and to teach workshops and speak to its diversity outreach group). But there was one time I was on the other side of the microphone, guest-hosting the Brian Lehrer Show. It's one of my favorite shows of any kind and Brian is one of the world's best interviewers, so sitting in his chair was daunting. I like to say that live call-in episode resulted in the most exciting, exhilarating two hours of my life (my wife was not amused to hear that, but I told her that ours being a Nair wedding from Kerala, was much shorter than two hours!). I'll never forget the experience, including taking calls from smart callers around NYC, and will forever be grateful for the opportunity. The guests we had on the show: veteran Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page on Bush administration scandals; former Clinton adviser Sidney Blumenthal and conservative Scott Johnson of Powerline Blog discuss possible Press Secretary successors to Scott McLellan; Don Carnevale of Chronicle of Hight Education on laptops in the classroom; New Yorker writer Caitlin Flanagan, author of "To Hell With All That;" calls from New Yorkers about a looming doormen's strike... Many thanks to Brian and to producers Nuala McGovern and Priya George for making this happen. It was a #LifeHighlight

New York On-Air Reporter
I had the privilege of being the substitute for the great Appan Menon, a legendary foreign correspondent for NDTV, India’s most important TV news network. When he was unavailable (and after he passed too young), I got to do some fun stories for “The World This Week” and other shows. I did live shows out of a NY studio for the Indian election, Indian budget and more. I did packages from DC (explaining what lobbying is), Boston (profiling sound pioneer Amar Bose and Harvard professor and future Nobelist Amartya Sen).
New York Correspondent For Business Today
I wrote more than 30 stories for this Indian business fortnightly, with occasional stories for India Today, a general news magazine. Among them, a cover story on Raja Gupta, when he became CEO of McKinsey & Co in 1994: https://web.archive.org/web/20130402223337/http://sree.net/stories/bt-gupta.html
