Graduate Student Researcher In M'Closkey Lab
Research in the UCLA M'Closkey Lab has consisted of the modeling and optimization of MEMS resonator gyroscopes. The work up to this point consists of two primary contributions. The first contribution is a novel method to derive the resonator's empirical frequency responses by extracting a transient state space model through a Hankel (Ho-Kalman) based approach. This method has the advantage of removing feed-through capacitances in the resonator frequency responses that are seen in conventional models (S. Schein and R.T. M'Closkey, JMEMS, 2021). The second contribution is the use of this new empirical state space model to fit a second order mechanistic model that accurately predicts changes in resonator dynamics after a theta dependent mass and/or stiffness perturbation has been applied (Unpublished).
Graduate Student Researcher In Ucla Eprl
Research in the UCLA EPRL has consisted of work on an iterative process for shaping the temporal velocity profile of a gaseous jet in crossflow (JICF). Alternative temporal waveforms, typically measured via hotwire anemometry at the center of the nozzle exit, have been shown to affect JICF mixing characteristics. The most challenging velocity waveforms to create are those with rapid transitions in the jet velocity, e.g., single- and double-pulse square waveforms. Although linear models of the jet velocity actuation can be empirically determined, in practice for the JICF, they yield poor reproductions of the desired waveforms because the jet velocity is a highly nonlinear function of the actuation variable. This research has further improved waveform control by using the periodicity of the desired velocity deviation relative to the mean jet velocity. We empirically determine a local model relating perturbations of the harmonics in the input variable to jet velocity harmonics and provide a means to adjust the input harmonics so that the jet profile converges toward the desired signal. My work has also included making a new efficient scheme that enables rapid convergence of the iterative method under a variety of flow conditions.
