Discussion topics include negative and persuasive messages, crisis communication, social media, organizational culture and structure, networking, conflict resolution, and more. Students in this course also put job-seeking skills such as resume writing, interviewing, and elevator speeches into practice. Receive consistent high evaluations from students utilizing the Student Input to Teaching Effectiveness (SITE) evaluation system.

Teach Business & Professional Speaking and Fundamentals of Public Speaking courses, involving up to 125 undergraduate students per semester for the Department of Communication in the Potter College of Arts & Letters. This involves helping select course textbooks, creating syllabi, and ensuring students leave the classroom with basic presentation skills as suggested in the National Communication Association guidelines.Utilize knowledge and skills in journalism and public relations to rewrite and redesign Communication Department publicity and recruiting pieces, such as brochures, flyers, letters, advertisements and posters.Serve on various department committees and represent the department at numerous recruiting events.Coordinated the Kentucky Public Speaking Conference on behalf of the Department of Communication in October 2007. The workshop involved 100 instructors of basic public speaking courses from all public universities in the state and two private higher education institutions.

Directed the speech, drama, and debate activities of 140 elementary, middle, and high schools. Worked closely with teachers and coaches to improve guidelines and lesson plans for 16 individual speaking events and three areas of debate. Served as liaison between these teachers and constituencies such as Western Kentucky University and the Kentucky Department of Education. Coordinated the State Drama Festival with the Department of Theatre & Drama, involving six drama troupes.Planned and implemented two statewide speech and debate tournaments that involve more than 900 students over the course of five days in March. This includes all logistical planning, coordination of hired help and volunteers, catering services, and publicity, along with coordinating the speech and debate events.

Interviewed players and coaches in order to write feature articles, hired additional writers and photographers as needed, designed page layouts using Quark and Illustrator software packages and handled the publications from design and pre-press to shipping.
