I spent almost 18 great years in various roles during my tenure at IBM. I began as a finance analyst for the Networking and Cabling unit but soon moved up to become the team leader for the Services division which included hardware and software maintenance as well as IBM Learning. Moving on from the Services unit I joined the IBM Hardware sales division as CFO and this was my first real exposure to the thrill of chasing the deal and of course the excitement of closing it!There were the normal daily finance tasks of - budgeting,- forecasting (using deal tracking tools and sales input)- monitoring of operational expense - - expense approvals and the dreaded cost capping when called for- ensuring the correct allocations of revenue, cost and expense.- local and international reportingMost of all I enjoyed the non-regular finance activities- Daily deal tracking & obstacle identification - Finding solutions to fit both the company and the customer - sales strategy & business development This division covered the various IBM hardware technologies at the time including xSeries, pSeries, zSeries machines as well as Enterprise storage solutions.Building on the above I joined the IBM Software Group (Sub-Saharan Africa) where I could build on the skills I acquired in my previous role. This time only it was not about machines, but what made them tick and helped develop the world into the place we know today. Our business covered from software security solutions to different web applications , Business Intelligence solutions and operating platforms.My last stop took me to the IBM Data Center / Customer response center where I was tasked to protect the BU's SMEBIT. Most of my time here was allocated to implement and monitor cost savings measures and find better alternatives to what we had deployed.I was also involved with various ad-hoc projects including the successful launch of offices in East and West Africa and a full GL mapping for the Region.

I was responsible for the day-to-day financial activities around the management of hostels and housing arrangement for mining groups on the West Rand.My biggest areas of focus was around the monitoring of actual bodies in beds vs mine forecast to achieve the desired cost per meal as contracted.This required - strong controls around physical security (access controls and bodies present), - stock control over protein, vegetables, fruit- control and monitoring of meal ticketsOther tasks included - Debtors control - Creditors control - Daily banking & reconciliations - Payroll - cash management
