Her 9-week project was to develop a proposal for a STEM council, and required her to a) familiarise herself with GSK's business, and that of the Ulverston site in particular b) perform a benchmarking exercise with STEM teams at other GSK sites, as well as with STEM teams from our neighbouring businesses c) work with a team of 60+ STEM ambassadors to identify improvements to the existing STEM management approach d) redesign the STEM materials storage area e) build a proposal for moving from a model where a single volunteer manages site STEM activities to one where the load is shared by a STEM Council f) define the key roles in the STEM Council and write corresponding "job descriptions" g) run an election process for the council In addition to completing this project, Steph found time to volunteer at several STEM events, as well as organise a "Chemistry at Work" event for 120 students and teachers from four local schools that was co-hosted by GSK and Siemens in Ulverston. While the event ran in October, Stephanie asked to return to the site to participate in the day, showing a real determination to see her project through to the end. Throughout her short internship, Stephanie demonstrated excellent leadership, teamwork, communication and project management skills, all of which will stand her in very good stead wherever her career takes her next."

    In the Summer of 2015 I was fortunate enough to secure an internship, through the Saltire Foundation, with leading pharmeceutical company- GlaxoSmithKline.During my time at GSK I created an innovative proposal to reform the structure of STEM activity. Whilst retaining strong focus on community engagement, I have been able to create a sustainable plan which seeks to link the current workforce with that of tomorrow. To accomplish this, it has been crucial to liaise professionally with external bodies (for example STEMNET- the national organisation for STEM, and other local businesses such as SIEMENS) as well as internal staff.My placement at GSK has been diverse and I have benefited from having a seat in the Commercial offices, allowing me to gain a broad understanding of the functioning of a global pharmaceutical business.
