About Stephanie Smith
I am a folklorist and archivist/librarian who is always looking for new ways to use my combined expertise. I am a longtime folk dancer who also researches and teaches dance. Because I cannot dance or research it during the pandemic, I have returned to my earlier work at the University of Edinburgh on the Scottish folk revival and traveler culture, and hope to publish it in the future. I currently tutor a student interested in folklore, traditional song, and archival research online. In my archives career, I most recently served as the Archives Director for the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. I managed four archival digitization projects funded by Save America's Treasures, the Smithsonian Collections Care and Preservation Fund, and the Smithsonian Collections Information Systems Pool to digitize audio and papers in the Moses and Frances Asch Collection, Cook Labs Records, Paredon Records, the Lee Hays Papers, Monitor Records, and Smithsonian Folklife Festival slides using rapid capture techniques. All digitized audio and image assets have embedded metadata and were ingested into Open Text Media Manager. In my role as Archives Director, I supervised the work of a digitization archivist, a processing archivist, an audio digitization and preservation specialist, and an image digitization specialist. My other significant work activities included writing grant proposals for collections care and support, preparing the annual collections and digitization statistics, and managing the still photography of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival for 10 days annually. I enjoy networking with library and archives professionals about best practices and current issues in digital collections, collections management, and embedded metadata. My experience on the non-profit boards of two major folk music and dance organizations has enriched both my professional and personal knowledge.Specialties: Photo archiving; digital asset management; embedded metadata; folk revival research; audio and video oral history interviews and transcriptions; archives collections management; folk event management; researching English country dance in the U.S.
Listed skills include Archives, Museum Collections, Metadata, Research, and 28 others.
