A Physics Graduate with the Laser & Calibration Products Division. My assigned project was to document, improve and verify a calibration process, to enable Renishaw's Rotary Axis Calibrator to reliably achieve a measurement accuracy of 1 arcsecond. I supported the design of the hardware/software required to achieve this process: creating requirements, conducting verification testing, and documenting the associated measurement uncertainty.

Summer Residentials involved delivering social activities with energy and confidence, as part of a team of Student Ambassadors. Responsibilities included being a positive role model, as well as having a duty of care over the teenagers attending, which required knowledge of child protection policy and university procedure. Often I was answering questions, either to a large group, or giving advice one-to-one, sometimes having to resolve a negative situation through listening and empathy. Other duties include interacting with our clients (prospective students) on a regular basis, through Open Days, school visits etc, always with the brand and the ethos of the university in mind. Through taking part in a vast range of jobs, I have shown that I am adaptable. I have also shown flexibility on occasions when my task has been altered significantly with little or no notice.

The year placement stage of my MPhys Physics degree comprised a full-time work placement with Renishaw in Exeter, as well as continued self-study outside of work for third-year exams. It was a challenging and rewarding time. The project explored the use of electromagnetic eddy currents in the non-destructive testing of metals, and required data analysis, VHDL and basic manual electronic assembly, as well as a firm grasp of the underpinning physical principles.
