Stephen’s design background ranges from large scale infrastructure for a NSW Government institution followed by the Planning & Development Management role for villages and nursing homes on the south coast of NSW. His early experience covers a diverse range of multi-unit residential projects, a residential housing estate and a major building conversion of a department store into a commercial company headquarters. From such an eclectic mix he has honed his skills in developing the framework and strategy for a project. By adopting a holistic approach from the outset, Stephen finds he can use his strategy to adapt to changes and corrections without compromises and without basic changes. His approach allows for the project to move and go beyond initial requirements and anticipates that the initial project may turn into something else.He describes himself as “good at teasing out” potential problems, solutions and rough edges especially those that are not always foreseen in the early design stage. This allows him to work with the client to develop a strategy that will be flexible enough to cope with a range of changing needs and ideas, especially in projects where there are several stakeholders. He particularly enjoys the challenge of health-related projects because of their complexity and the need to address (often) conflicting rules related to the building. He is also experienced in exploring the value of existing buildings and addressing issues for re-purposing.“I most enjoy sitting with clients and working with them on the very early framework of a project in a way that will allow us to make adjustments down the track without major problems.”His recent healthcare experience includes• Master planning of a health campus in the Illawarra• Master planning of an inner Sydney private hospital precinct• Design of the pilot project for a rapid testing HIV clinic• Design of 180 bed private hospital redevelopment incorporating non-acute mental health unit and upgrade of operating theatres and recovery• Provision of MRI unit to public hospital
