I systematically reviewed the methods of detecting and predicting radiation induced lung injury and analysed pre- and post-treatment imaging to compare CT, ventilation and perfusion hyperpolarised gas MRI in their ability to detect radiation induced lung injury following radiotherapy for lung cancer.• I also investigated functional avoidance radiotherapy for lung cancer, delineating the gross tumour volume of lung cancers and the organs at risk on inspiration CT chest images.

    Elective experience in Oncology and Drug Development at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer ResearchUnder Professor de Bono, Professor Kaye, Dr Banerji, Dr Banerjee and Dr Lalondrelle9 September – 20 September: Laboratory-based work at The Institute of Cancer Research, Sutton.I was involved in a range of laboratory procedures: DNA extraction, sequencing, tissue culturing, histopathology and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH), circulating tumour cell (CTC) enumeration, western blotting. 23 September – 4 October: Drug Development and Clinical Oncology Units, Royal Marsden, Sutton.During the Drug Development placement I attended the unit’s regular clinical meetings where patients were allocated into Phase I trials and discussions took place about patients already on Phase I trials. I attended DDU outpatient clinics; and shadowed ward staff.At the Clinical Oncology Unit, I shadowed Dr. Susan Lalondrelle’s team in their day-to-day activities. I observed the management, radiotherapy planning and treatment of patients with gynaecological and skin cancers.7 October – 18 October: Drug Development Unit and Gynaecology Medical Oncology team, Royal Marsden, Sutton.I continued my placement at the DDU but transfered from Clinical Oncology to the Gynaecology Medical Oncology team under Dr. Susanna Banerjee , where I attended out-patient and chemotherapy clinics.I was also able to help undertake an audit with the DDU team. I helped collate data on the patient pathway from referral to the department until their enrollment on a clinical trial.
