Senior Software Engineering ManagerOracle 2015 - Jun 2018Austin, Texas, UsCore Responsibilities• Manage engineering teams responsible for Database Performance Analytics, SQL Performance Analytics, and Database Resource Analytics applications in Oracle Management Cloud • Create project plans and set team priorities based on organizational goals• Design and review software architecture and code• Coordinate with product, QA, and other engineering teamsAccomplishments• Led the design and creation of the Database Performance Analytics application for Oracle Management Cloud (OMC). This application allows DBAs to visualize the performance characteristics of hundreds of databases simultaneously and algorithmically identifies potential performance problems such as workload variability, performance degradation, and inefficiency. It is implemented in Oracle JET which is based on Javascript, HTML5, Knockout, and jQuery.• Drove the design and creation of the SQL Performance Analytics application for OMC. This application collects SQL statistics and empowers DBAs to look at SQL performance across all of their databases concurrently to identify SQL statements that are degrading, have variant performance, are inefficient, or have plan changes. • Directed the implementation of the Database Resource Analytics application for OMC. This application displays database hardware resource utilization and algorithmically predicts capacity problems, allowing DBAs to take preventative action. • Guided team through a successful transition to a new product, microservice architecture, and Javascript technology stack. • Coached team to adopt Agile planning processes and industry standard tools such as git and JIRA. -
Software Engineering ManagerOracle 2012 - 2014Austin, Texas, UsCore Responsibilities• Managed an engineering team responsible for Database Diagnostics and Tuning, the top revenue source for Enterprise Manager Cloud Control (EMCC)Accomplishments• Founded a team based in Guadalajara, Mexico and grew it to 5 strong engineers. Made key early hires with strong leadership, independence, and communication skills that paved the path for future team expansion. Onboarded and trained team members, and fostered a collaborative environment that resulted in strong alignment between teams in US and Mexico. The team in Mexico has successfully developed key features and the engineers have become respected within the organization. • Led the development of SQL Performance Analyzer (SPA) Quick Check. Quick Check allows DBAs to perform what-if analyses on the performance impact of potential system changes without time-consuming advanced setup, preventing performance degradation in production environments. • Led the upgrade of Enterprise Manager Diagnostics and Tuning to support Container Databases (CDB), a new feature in Oracle 12c which allows multiple databases to run as one. Significantly enhanced dozens of features, including Top Activity and ASH Analytics, to map workloads to Pluggable Databases.• Spearheaded the cross-component integration between three key database diagnostics pages and the JVM diagnostics page, allowing DBAs to seamlessly correlate problematic SQL, wait events, and server requests. -
Principal Member Of Technical StaffOracle 2007 - 2011Austin, Texas, Us• Architected and implemented Active Session History (ASH) Analytics, the most powerful database diagnostics tool available for Oracle databases. ASH Analytics is widely used by Oracle DBAs and is a key driver for customer purchases of the Enterprise Manager Diagnostics pack, the top revenue source for Enterprise Manager. ASH Analytics empowers DBAs to quickly diagnose production issues by viewing database workloads by dozens of dimensions (sessions, SQL, users, etc), enabling rapid identification of problematic database activity. Created interactive visualizations such as treemaps and stacked area charts, facilitating easy recognition of data skews and containment relationships. Received a patent for innovation in segmentation and display of active session history data.• Designed and implemented the Database Performance Page of Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. This page is the starting point for DBAs to diagnose database workloads. It was designed to allow DBAs to quickly identify systemic problems and further explore them. Added metric baselines, ADDM runs, and visualizations for I/O, parallel queries, throughput, and services. Achieved scalability and performance by building a real-time metric collection engine that queries the database at regular intervals for performance metrics and stores them in a cache. • Implemented database diagnostics and tuning features such as the Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) Administration page, AWR Baseline and Snapshot details pages and admin functionality, AWR Report page, ASH Report page, and SQL Tuning Sets page. -
Senior Member Of Technical StaffOracle 2004 - 2006Austin, Texas, Us• Built original version of Enterprise Manager Database Performance Page, the first feature in Enterprise Manager with a truly interactive experience. Architected a charting framework in SVG that enabled real-time page content refreshes.• Implemented database diagnostics and tuning features such as Top Activity, Search Sessions, EM SQL History, SGA Memory Advisor, Top Services, Top Modules, Top Actions, and Top Clients. -
Member Of Technical StaffOracle 2001 - 2003Austin, Texas, Us• Built numerous Enterprise Manager features in JSPs and Java such as Database Home Page, Snapshot, and Baseline pages.• Implemented feature to view, filter, modify, and review revision history of database initialization parameters.
