Heritage, conservation/preservation planning and development adviser, based in the UK, but with extensive experience providing advice on heritage assets and historic areas to national, regional and municipal authorities internationally.UK project work in the past 5 years has involved:• conservation governance, strategic advice and research for Government departments, agencies, local authorities, and public funding organisations• policy development and preparation of best practice guidance• effective development, assessment and survey advice on complex heritage sites for developers, investment portfolio managers, and charitable trusts. Recent World Heritage Site work includes capacity building and heritage management projects in Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, India and the UK. Other international projects have involved major area evaluations, impact assessments, and the development of heritage protection and conservation governance guidance for the historic Cholon in Ho Chi Minh City.Co-author of ‘Managing Built Heritage – the Role of Cultural Significance’ published by Wiley-Blackwell (2008); author/contributor to various publications and articles on significance, heritage assessment, and World Heritage issues. Course Director for Oxford University Continuing Education courses on conservation plans and heritage values and World Heritage as part of English Heritage's Professional Training in the Historic Environment programme. Speaker at UK/international conferences, including UNESCO's 'World Heritage and Contemporary Architecture - Managing the Historic Urban Landscape' conference (Vienna 2005) and IIC's 2010 Istanbul Congress live roundtable debate 'Between Home and History - Managing the Interface Between Preservation and Development of Living Historic Places'.Working ethos: heritage places are our legacy from the past; they must work to survive and should be used responsibly to the greatest benefit, for today and tomorrow.
