Playing team sports as a kid gave me a work ethic that still drives me today: make every team better because you were there.That drive might have started on basketball courts and baseball fields, but it was just as important when Managing Sales Operations for OSRAM’s Digital Lighting Group in the Americas with a sales base of over $200M. My team might have ups and downs, but after every day, every month, every season, my team will be better because of me.Of course that isn’t the only lesson from playing (and later coaching) youth sports that can be applied to business. Just like every game is different, every day and every interaction is different. I had a unique role at Osram and flexibility was key as I shifted from working with outside customers to inside customers and interacted with Sales, Customer Service, Finance, Planning, Quality, Compliance, Legal, Marketing, IT, Supply Chain Logistics, and Product Manufacturing & Development. Just like good coaching, good business is about amplifying strengths, positioning to take advantage of events and finding new ways to seize opportunities. Working with my team to find new ways to boost sales is how we achieved our company’s highest sales total ever in September 2018 and we were recognized by the Osram Board of Directors in Germany.Whether you’re leading a cross-departmental team or a sports program, planning is essential. You must have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, develop a plan that strives for this goal, and effectively communicate it so everyone is working together.
