I’m lucky enough to have had a new career in later life. I was a freelance Domestic Energy Assessor from 2011 until 2020, and I was lodging Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for existing dwellings (RdSAP), mostly to enable householders to claim their feed-in tariff for solar PV panels. (Remember that?). Since March 2013 I have also been carrying out energy assessments for new dwellings (new-build and conversions), making design stage recommendations to achieve Part L building regulation compliance, and lodging full SAP EPCs for ERS Consultants Ltd., a thriving local family business. After almost 4 years of semi-retirement, I have, with mixed feelings, finally retired from paid work altogether, and I left ERS on 26 January 2024.I have been actively concerned about climate change since 2005 when I stumbled across an Oxford-based charity called Climate Outreach and Information Network (known as COIN) which was set up in 2004 with a mission to engage new audiences on climate change. However my concern significantly pre-dates that. I remember reading about it in New Scientist in the 1990s and thinking ‘I hope that isn’t true’, and at the same time understanding the physics and knowing that something would have to be done about it sooner or later. That concern has been channelled into involvement in community action groups, especially Kidlington vs Climate Change (2007-2018) founded by my good friends Anthony and Janet.Redundancy in 2009 gave me the opportunity to volunteer for Climate Outreach (formerly COIN), which has now matured to become Europe’s leading climate communication organisation, helping governments, businesses, NGOs and grass-roots organisations to communicate effectively on climate change – and I am still volunteering for them! At the same time I pursued my interest in energy in buildings by studying for a masters degree at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, which led to the opportunity at ERS.And now my task is to put to good use my 15 years learning about how to slow the flow of heat energy through a house, and spend my savings on thermally improving the 1950s semi that I live in. It’s almost as old as me, and I want to decimate its requirement for energy so that I can heat it with a clear conscience in my dotage, and pass it to the next generation as a 21st century house.(I should probably do some housework as well.)

Kidlington vs Climate Change (KvsCC) was a voluntary community action group formed to raise awareness and help Kidlington residents towards the point of taking action to reduce their impact on the environment. I took the Chair of this group in 2011. As time went on, we found we could not attract new active members to the group or dream up new activities, and eventually took the difficult decision to wind it up. The spin-off group, Kidlington Abundance, continues to function, and KvsCC's assets (a bit of cash and two gazebos) were passed to them.

This was a temporary assignment on a 'Green Deal' community engagement project with pilot funding under the DECC LEAF programme, (Department of Energy and Climate Change, Local Energy Assessment Fund).
I joined when it was the Potato Marketing Board (PMB) and ran a small library and information service within the R&D department. The PMB was closed in 1997 and transferred into the much smaller British Potato Council (BPC). The BPC was entirely funded through statutory levy on potato growers and companies in the supply chain (e.g. packers, processors) and became very successful. Its objectives were to increase the competitiveness of the British potato industry and to increase the usage of British potatoes. From 2002 I was a member of the Knowledge Transfer team responsible for managing the website, publishing technical literature and email newsletters, answering technical enquiries, and event support.A further re-organisation in 2008, when BPC became simply the Potato Council, resulted in its relocation to Warwickshire with the other agricultural levy bodies, and I elected to take redundancy rather than relocate.
