As the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Health Foundation of South Florida Steven Marcus, Ed.D. guided the Foundation’s path to impact through investments, informing policy and serving as a neutral convener of health leaders and stakeholders on a local, state and national level. Since taking the helm in 2000, the Foundation has invested over $88 million in initiatives to promote a culture of health for residents and the communities in which they live. Under his leadership, Steve played a key role to join together eight Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) to provide grant funding and implement the transition to electronic medical records. Soon after, records for these centers included combining behavioral health and electronic medical records. The next step was a million-dollar investment for FQHC’s to be part of a new provider service network which created an opportunity to serve as an umbrella for the centers to work together and manage thousands of patients.Another innovated approach streamlined the Foundation’s responsive grant application process which was modified to be co-designed with Foundation staff and the applicant. He led the way when the Foundation embarked on key initiatives and programs. This included launching Priority Areas: Behavioral Health, Healthy Eating Active Communities, Primary Care and Preventive Health Measures (now part of Other Community Health Needs). Nine years later, Foundation grants have reached 1.6 million South Florida residents, either by services or through targeting health promotion in schools, childcare centers, and neighborhoods.Dr. Marcus also shaped new Foundation initiatives, which includes grant-making based on social determinants of health, with a primary focus on community development and economic prosperity programs for the underserved. Other initiatives where his vision led to impact include the five-year Healthy Aging strategic initiative. The initiative helped more than 38,000 older adults age strong and paved the way for Age-Friendly Miami-Dade. His passion for partnerships inspired the Live Healthy Community Partnerships initiative, with premiere partners the neighborhood of Little Havana and the City of Miami Gardens.
