I continue to serve CFFW has its government liaison. When I was appointed VP at a board meeting I wasn't asked to attend -- well, I offered to take the post on one condition: that we would completely change the group's direction. This was a well-informed, highly intelligent group of bona fide rocket scientists (many work at KSC on Merritt Island, FL), who also love to boat. Their favorite pasttime was destroyed by well-intentioned but ill-founded regulations attempting to "save the manatee."A few years' later, I stepped into the President's position. Over the years, we helped create the Manatee Forum, a quasi-governmental group of opposing interests. We fought for better science, and have been gratified to be proven right, again and again. (Boats are not an extinction threat to manatees.) It has been an overly long fight -- We have been at this for more than a decade, which is a testament to the power of government. But, we will prevail.

This was an unknown, powerless trade organization whose members could not legally work in Florida due to a Federal permit moratorium. As Executive Director, I transformed it into a respected, effective, even admired, professional association.Key accomplishments include:-1 growing membership by five-fold over five years-2 ending the moratorium -3 a 10-fold reduction in workers' compensation costs -- from $116 per $100 in wages (that is not a typo!) to $12 per $100 in 2007. -4 establishing a marine construction specialty license-5 working hand in hand with regulatory agencies to increase compliance and enforcement while decreasing cost and delays-6 creating the nation's first trade show -- the Florida Marine Construction EXPO -- for the industry, as well as a second show, dubbed the "mini expo"
