The Livermore Process Improvement (LPI) team is sponsored by the LLNL Director’s office to cultivate process improvement at LLNL. I am the Process Improvement Lean Six Sigma team leader for the institutional group of black belts. In addition I am solely responsible to train, mentor, and coach champions and yellow belts across the institution. My experience ranges from leading machinists to discover and implement an innovative way to produce laser fusion components to redefining business processes to ensure reports are produced on time.I am responsible for ensuring my team’s processes meet customer demands. These processes include project life cycle tracking, financial results reporting, and business goal setting. As a senior member of the LLNL process improvement team, I certified and was promoted to the position of Master Yellow Belt to develop and improve the training vital to produce additional leaders in process management, process improvement, and lean principles. Life of the program certification rate is 70%!• Provided training for over 140 yellow belts, personally mentored 50 of them toward certification.• I train and mentor senior managers and organizational leaders as Lean Six Sigma Champions.

As one of the LLNL’s initial Lean Six Sigma Black Belts, through hands-on project work, I’ve learned the practice and art of Lean Six Sigma in a complex and diverse enterprise. Black Belt success not only depends on mastery of proven improvement tools, but most importantly, practicing the art of intelligently applying those tools. I’ve led institutional process improvement project teams to achieve results for scientific, engineering, and business related processes.• Employed Lean improvement techniques to decrease National Ignition Facility target diagnostic configuration cycle time by 60% resulting in 50% reduction of required manpower to prepare for experiments.• Established Process Management Systems for High Energy Density physics target production, resulting in 33% reduction of production cost, equivalent to 30 man days of time.• Increased Industrial Partnerships Office Commercial Agreements, resulting in $1.3M cost benefit.• Decreased Nuclear Operations Documented Safety Analysis Annual Review Cycle, resulting in $350K benefit.

I have over 25 years of process improvement and organization development project leadership. I hold a BS and MS in Organization Development and I'm a certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Master Yellow Belt. My systems engineering technical experience, military service, and 25 years of work at a National Laboratory have produced amazing results as I've consulted with executive leaders, line managers, and supervisors to improve administrative and production processes.

Bechtel National, Inc., Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NMI was trained by the Bechtel Corporate Master Black Belt and certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Training included thorough application of the Six Sigma improvement stages of define, measure, analyze, improve, and control, DMAIC) and performance based behavioral tools. My two certification projects are listed below.• A team responsible for producing monthly financial reports needed to ensure 100% on time reporting. We applied Lean improvement principles to increase the monthly closing rate to 100% on-time closing. This was a significant factor for the organization.• Worked with researchers to increase the genomic colony count for genomic research at the Joint Genome Institute, Walnut Creek, CA. Project increased the success rate of colony growth.

Prior to my Lean Six Sigma certification, I was trained as a Process Improvement leader at the Atomic Weapons Establishment, in Aldermaston, England. With these skills, I led an early adapter team that developed and implemented process improvement strategies and objectives at LLNL.• Increased awareness and practice of the Six Sigma DMAIC model by co-designing and instructing a comprehensive training overview of the process improvement methodology.• Devised and provided strategic planning in support of institutional objectives.• Created detailed process maps and provided analysis of LLNL’s Nuclear Materials Technology Program’s (NMTP) Unreviewed Safety Question Determination process, resulting in $160,000 annual benefit.• Determined metrics and roles for future state processes.• Built and fostered relationships resulting in the elimination of barriers to change.• Resolved multiple Department of Energy audit findings in only six months by utilizing process improvement methodologies.
