In this role I was leading a 25 person agile delivery team, focussing on web and mobile solutions. I had end to end responsibility for a number of systems and accountability for the delivery of software change projects. Leading a multi-disciplined team of IT professionals I provided coaching and mentoring to individuals and provided the support and environment for people to reach their full potential.Reporting to the CIO I also provided support and advice on both strategic goals and implementation of those goals.

I was part of the executive management team of VTech, the IT function for Vero New Zealand. Reporting to the CIO, I had responsibility for the operational management of the Application Support Team and the Quality Assurance Team. This, together with my Java Team Leader responsibilities, made me responsible for around 60 people.As part of the executive management team, I played an active part in setting the strategic goals of the department and ensuring they enabled the overall Vero business strategy to be implemented. I worked closely with the team leaders in both the Application Support and Quality Assurance teams, making sure that their own team strategies were in place to meet wider business goals. I also facilitated their development, using regular coaching and mentoring to help them manage and lead their teams.In addition to my leadership and strategic responsibilities, I successfully completed a two year leadership development programme bringing together a small number of managers from right across Vero. Recognition as a potential leader came after successfully delivering as a project manager, whilst continuing in my Java Team Leader responsibilities.

As the Java Team Leader at Vero, I was responsible for managing a team of permanent and contract Java Software Engineers. Over the first twelve months in the role, I redesigned the Java team, saving the business over $1 million in the process. This redesign was achieved by shifting the balance from contract to permanent staff, and by introducing a more stringent policy on resource allocation.Managing people is something I really enjoy. I'm not afraid to tackle performance issues, but work hard to avoid this by managing the professional and personal development of my team members. I took time to get to know members of the team thoroughly so I was able to allocate resources effectively, matching the right people with the right project. I was regularly recruiting throughout my time as Java Team Leader, hiring both permanent and contract staff. Retention of talent was also important for the Java team.

Having started as a Project Manager in the Information Systems Division focused on support and improvement of finance function. Steven went on to be a team lead in the Wal*Mart global project to transform the finance function through the implementation of SAP. The project was seen through to a very successful implementation before Steven left Asda to pursue a lifestyle change by emigrating to New Zealand in July 2009
