Celebrating 30 years of SSE!► As a young boy, I dreamed of being an architect. So, how did I end up becoming a structural engineer?When I was applying to college, my pragmatic father steered me toward structural engineering. I went to the University of Connecticut and focused on the 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 of building design rather than the 𝙖𝙧𝙩. As it turns out, this was a great match for my personality, and I grew to love structural design… ...but I was still drawn to architecture. While working professionally as an engineer, I jumped at the opportunity to take studio design courses, applied to a graduate architecture program, and designed five retail spaces in downtown Boston. My venture down this dual path paid off in an unexpected way--I cultivated an identity as an engineer who draws deeply from a reverence for architecture. I honed this engineer-architect sensibility while apprenticing in four different Boston-area firms; and, in 1994 I opened my own practice. Why does this history matter to you?Because I see engineering problems through an architect’s eyes. Great architecture needs engaged, open-minded, and creative engineers to bring building design to the highest level.
