I added log rotation, identified and removed over-zealous alerts, and enabled the system to heal on its own to reduce the number of out-of-hours system alerts from a flood to a trickle. I ran a "Failure Friday" series of events to train people for handling incidents, and expanded the on-call rotation from two to seven engineers.I migrated our primary application (Django app) and its data stores (PostgreSQL, Cassandra and Redis) to AWS, in four phases to reduce risk. Set up automated continuous integration and deployment pipelines for applications and infrastructure on AWS using CircleCI.

Designed a new product API and caching strategy that helped Net-a-Porter stay up through unprecedented levels of traffic during sales, Peter Pilotti & Kate Moss promotion campaigns. I wrote the initial version using Scala, Akka & Spray; and remained one of the core developers until I left. The API used SOLR for indexing and facetting, Memcached for internal caching, and NginX for edge caching.

Chaired the API Working Group to have a forum for discussing how to construct APIs that are scalable, testable, and supportable. We were in a transition to a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and many teams were coming to this problem for the first time. I co-wrote the REST service backend of The Netbook using Scala and Akka, and deployed on Heroku. We used Postgres, MongoDB & Redis for persistence and caching.

Overhauled countless reports and batch jobs interacting with Sybase databases using the Perl DBI. Added tests, removed dead code, and made the remaining code more robust. Wrote a tool to creating and updating custom index tickers and their compositions at Bloomberg and Reuters. Also wrote the first and second production versions of an event-driven health check system for Index style products, and mentored the subsequent maintainer for four months.

Maintained Canon Image Gateway's legacy picture server, storing terabytes of images. Carefully removed duplication, unused features, and useless abstractions, and reduced this code base size by 15 percent. Helped develop a server-side JavaScript web application development environment. I implemented the ability to clone or backup a running application (and its associated data), and to restore applications from such backups.

Wrote PHP code to transparently access trades spread across multiple MySQL shards, greatly improving performance. I removed code duplication in all aspects of the system, organising the code into libraries, abstracted away physical differences between the dev and prod environments, and automated the release procedure. I also introduced the team to revision control.
