I’m currently the Chief Technology Officer at Formus Pro, a business software provider, specialising in Microsoft Dynamics 365. I’m a software architect by background but nowadays I’m also responsible for all our internal software development processes, making sure that our development teams are working as smoothly and efficiently as possible.I don’t think I’ll ever stop getting excited by the challenge of creating a software solution that meets a customer’s highly specific requirements. It’s hugely satisfying to write a piece of code that automates processes, freeing up time for staff to focus on other, more value-adding activities. The efficiencies this creates can be significant. In the case of one of our oldest clients, Anthony Nolan, for example, this has helped to reduce the time it takes to match patients with suitable stem cell donors.It was during my sandwich year at University that I was first introduced to Microsoft Dynamics. After graduation, I joined my brother Glenn in the newly-formed Formus Pro, as a software developer at first and then as an architect, working extensively with Anthony Nolan initially and then on a host of other businesses as Formus Pro began to expand.Today, I split my time between running several projects of my own while also overseeing the work of our development teams, providing final sign-off on every proposed software solution. Behind the scenes, we use Agile on all our projects, alongside Azure DevOps to track the work we do. It’s my responsibility to make sure that’s all working as it should and that we’re operating as efficiently as we can. That’s been an interesting challenge for me. While I’ve previously worked with such tools and approaches as a developer, it’s only recently that I’ve had to think about how they could be improved for our customers’ benefit. I now find this every bit as satisfying as the development work itself because if I can improve our own processes, we can deliver more projects and help even more customers – and that’s a winning feeling.Away from work, I got married in 2021 – at the fourth time of asking, thanks to Covid restrictions causing three postponements. Baby Lily arrived the following summer, so any thoughts I had of trying to get back into my running have been firmly put on hold since then!
