Incident Recovery MangerCoordinate and manage the multi agency recovery and clean up operation established under the Dyfed Powys Local Resilience Forum following major incident on 26 August 2020 in which a Milford to Reading freight train transporting 2500 tonnes of diesel fuel derailed and caught fire resulting in evacuation of 100's of local residents and environmental incident impacting the internationally important Burry Estuary and shellfisheries. Described by Network Rail as the most serious environment incident they had ever been involved with and the largest oil spill since the Sea Empress disaster in 1996. The clean up involved round the clock operations for 6 months and removal of 30,000 tonnes of contaminated ground to enable two critical freight and passenger rail corridors to reopen to minimise social, business and economic impacts. The operation was hampered by severe weather tidal and fluvial flooding and complex hydrogeology and underlying abandoned mine workings. Monitoring and sampling programmes were established with Public Health and Food Standards Agencies to ensure the safety of local shellfish destined for the human consumption.
