At Auto Trader I was the UX front-end developer for both desktop and mobile sites for Auto Trader Truck, Plant and Farm along with Autotrader.ie and Carzone.ie in Ireland. The work is and 40/60 split between the consumer (car buyers) classified adverts and our customers (car dealers) advanced stock management, market insight and advert placement systems.My day-to-day work is HTML, CSS in the form of ScSS & BEM, a little JavaScript & front-end Angularjs. I also work with the wider Auto Trader UX & Design teams to produce and follow the brand guidelines in Manchester, London and Dublin using Sketch for the assets and Zeplin to share and collaborate.Working closely with the Java developers has given me great insight in how to best design, ready for coding; each discipline adding to what can be achieved. It is especially good to have an understanding of development when working on Axure RP wireframes; so that testing and iterating can replicate the software product faithfully.Auto Trader is a data driven business and work in an Agile environment with daily stand-ups and a regular team retro. Pair programming and code reviews with GitHub help to keep standards high; with personal development time, a wide selection of conferences and access to online training resources like Lynda.com, O’Reilly books and Stack Overflow as well as in-house talks by leading tech people for example Jeff Gothelf – Lean UX, brown bag and lunch & learn sessions which helped me to keep up with the latest trends and skills. I also enjoy the mentoring within the company where you can support others and get support from others; I currently mentor our graduate designer.My career has always been design and coding but as the roles become more separated I would like to return to a more design role based strongly in UX.

At Tradewinds I was brought in for three months to troubleshoot their existing four websites and correct the bad coding, optimise the code and images, plus redesign the one static site and help in the migration of the three dynamic sites from a NetSuite front-end to a Magento front-end with a Celigo connector to the existing NetSuite backend. The optimization of the code and image was archived making the sites load more quickly and more easy to maintain. I successfully redesigned the static site using HTML5 and CSS3.

While working for Scott Dawson I had a chance to be part of a larger advertising agency. My role was to take designs from the print studio as well as make my own designs then turn those designs into static HTML or WordPress websites or the front-end HTML and CSS for dynamic sites built by the developer. I worked on a number of email campaigns producing the artwork & code appropriate to email clients. I also produced three simple iOS Apps. My skills were also used to transfer and organise the company’s web hosting and domain registrations from dispersed & disorganised arrangements into a coherent and cost effective replacement. I was also able to mentor a junior member of staff with the depth of my knowledge in a wide range of software packages.

Working at Utobia was a challenge for me to work outside of an Internet design company. At Utobia I worked to bring the company’s products to the Internet through a completely new e-commerce site and through the Japanese shopping sites, Yahoo! Shops and Rakuten. As a small company I was able to use my photography skills to help reduce costs and to speed up the addition of products to the websites. I am also proud that I was able to produce some of the company’s trade newspaper adverts and the packaging for a range of netbooks sold under the StarPC Dreambook name. It was also at Utobia that I achieved my first success in software UI design when I designed the user interface for a Nintendo DS media player.

I started with GR8 UK as the company set up, I am pleased that I helped get the office’s IT needs arranged and that I brought in the revenue with a number of sites design while this SEO company got off the ground.I am also more than happy with my training and support given to the new employee taken on as the company expanded. The internal, web based sales system, designed to assist the sales team was perhaps my best achievement.
