Typically this would start with the requirements capture from a customer and scoping the required hardware and software architecture that can satisfy the requirements. The projects range from low-power sensing for IoT applications to HV electricity distribution monitoring and switching devices. The hardware design is split in to interfacing blocks ranging from analogue front end design to high current switching power supplies. The design process for each block would start with simulating the proposed approaches in SPICE to build confidence in the proposed design. Follwing this, schematic capture would typically contain the individual blocks in a hierarchical structure clearly stating with notes/comments any design parameters that the circuit intends to achieve. Test points are added through out to allow for improved debugging.Next, the PCB design follows with key considerations taken around mechanical fit, thermal considerations, high frequency signals etc. Once the board has been manufactured, the individual circuit blocks are tested independently to confirm the performance of the real system against the simulated expectations. Any modifications are clearly documented so as not to be missed when building the next revision. The work is version controlled with all commits clearly documenting the changes made hence allowing for traceability and ease of review. The embedded software architecture typically dictates the interactions between the stack layers noting the required software drivers that need to be developed and the interface that is expected. For cases where external communications are required (e.g. 2.4 GHz radio), the packet definition is also determined accordingly. The software work is tracked in a sprint and version controlled in either SVN or Git depending on the project.System integration follows with bespoke and complex test rigs built to verify the device perfomance.
