The Glassworks Sixth Form Centre, Folkestone

Providing individually tailored academic/emotional support to Post 16 students both in and outside of the classroom; dealing with behavioural and pastoral issues and overseeing the smooth running of the sixth form centre. Also acted as a cover supervisor when teachers were absent, minibus driver, receptionist and exam invigilator when the need arose and sixth form tutor. Compiled and edited the sixth form newsletter, The Works.

Folkestone

Working as part of a team of eight Pastoral Managers and their respective Heads of House to support pupils and enforce the school's behaviour policy. This was a demanding role requiring a great deal of patience, tact and emotional intelligence. I also supervised private study lessons several times a week and covered for teaching staff when they were absent.

Working alongside three other Pastoral Managers I was responsible for the welfare of pupils in my house. Priorities included responding to and dealing with any behavioural issues, liaising with teachers, parents, pupils, support staff and outside agencies and raising standards of attendance, punctuality and uniform.

Part-time position working with Level 2 students within the College for Young People. Working in partnership with teaching staff in the preparation of individual learning plans, assisting and supporting students both in the classroom and outside on a one-to-one basis and monitoring attendance.

Folkestone

Responsible for producing all editorial for the Folkestone editions of the Kentish Express/Folkestone Extra, managing the news diary, attending meetings and representing the newspaper at local events and functions and dealing with the public.

Maidstone

Writing news stories, features and advertising copy to daily/weekly deadlines. Attending court, local council meetings, inquests, Press briefings and other local events. Liaising with local emergency services and members of the public.

I joined the Dover Express as a trainee and passed my NCTJ National Proficiency Test in April 1992. I then moved to the Folkestone Herald where I wrote features, news stories, film, TV and cinema reviews and weekly named columns to deadline. Runner-up Shepherd Neame Kent Journalist of the Year 1991, and runner-up EMAP Columnist of the Year 1992.
