My name is Susan Walters and I have been an Insurance Agent since 2009. The event that started my journey of becoming an insurance agent occurred on Halloween 2008. Our teenage daughter wrecked her car and injured 2 of her friends. One friend was transported via helicopter and spent time in the ICU. The other friend had broken her back in 5 places. At the time we had a little better than state minimums for liability coverage. Our policy had NOT been updated to protect us with teenage drivers. Eventually, we received a letter from the insurance company stating that “the insurance investigation had revealed that the claims being presented may have a potential value which may exceed your policy limits”. We were petrified as we continued to read the next line stating, “You may wish to consult legal counsel at your own expense to advise you on this issue”. This letter also informed us that Montana law states that once our insurance company exhausts our coverage, they no longer have to defend us from a lawsuit.My husband and I spent the next 3 years under stress, losing sleep and dreading the outcome. My family was in danger of losing everything we worked so hard to obtain. The difference between the devastation my family was facing and the security of my family’s future was $12 a month.I was livid that we didn’t know better. I began educating myself about insurance to become an advocate to make sure no family I knew would have to face a potential catastrophe. Shortly thereafter Farmers approached me to become an Agent and I took the opportunity to advocate, educate and insure the future of families.
