About Susan Zwerling
My previous experiences as a successful nonprofit leader and a training and development coordinator came together synergistically with my love of museums in 2007. After progressive museum responsibility (most recently as Director of Education) and a game-changing Smithsonian Affiliates Fellowship I continued to hone my skills through consulting, focusing primarily on museum evaluation and community engagement. I then accepted a position with the American Alliance of Museums as a Museum Assessment Program Officer.Working with hundreds of museums and peer reviewers across the country as they participated in MAP and Core Document Verification gave me a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing both museums and communities, and led me to my current position of Assistant Director, Learning Communities. My two areas of focus now are project director of a $2 million cooperative agreement between AAM and NPS for a 5 year community outreach initiative, and assessing professional development needs in the museum field. I received an MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University and also hold both BA and MA degrees in Management. I've worked as a nurse. a library technician, a food critic, and have had many more experiences with transferable skills and fun adventures.

My daily focus: I act as a "case manager" for museums and peer reviewers going through the Museum Assessment Program process. This involves reviewing applications for eligibility, matching peer reviewers to museums, coaching and training, providing resources for organizational development and maintaining records throughout the process. I’ve designed survey tools to evaluate the impact of our program and the effectiveness of our learning management system. Verification of core documents (a prerequisite to applying for accreditation) for museums is another key aspect of my job. I interact with museum staff and stakeholders, peer reviewers and IMLS staff as well as across internal AAM departments. I also present and chair panels at museum conferences, primarily about museum assessment programs and about opportunities to become a peer reviewer. Recent presentations have been at the AAM Annual Meeting, the Mountain Plains Regional Conference and the Texas Association of Museums Annual Conference.
