After getting my degree in Financial Planning and serving as a peer mentor at Texas Tech, I still felt strongly connected with serving students in college. I found that the one thing that attracts me to Higher Education is the ability to help students achieve their goals. In fact, one of my favorite authors and advocates for human rights, James Baldwin, put it nicely when he said “The purpose of education...is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions.” Autonomy, self-discovery, and the ability to parse through decisions is what makes us human; helping students navigate through these experiences is what I live for.Since having these realizations, I have had the opportunity to work with the PACE Advising Center at Texas State University, serving over 400+ incoming students with registration and academic advising in all majors. After my time there, I moved to the Applied Arts & Sciences Advising Center where I helped advise all 9 majors offered in the college.I have now found myself back in my hometown serving incoming and current students who may need the extra helping hand to guide them through college. My goal in this position is to provide students with an easy transition, supply all necessary resources, and give them a space to explore themselves, their majors, and the opportunities education can provide.
