About Muhammad Tahir Ashraf
I am a process engineer working in the field of biorefinery and biofuels. I have experience in process design, simulation, and optimization. In addition, I have experience in experimental design and analytical procedures for the evaluation of pretreatment and fermentation technologies in a biorefining process. A brief overview of my experience during Ph.D., M.Sc. and industry are given below.My Ph.D. research at Masdar Institute is a part of the collaborative project with MIT: “Biorefinery: Integrated Sustainable Processes for Biomass Conversion to Biomaterial, Biofuels, and Fertilizer”. My Ph.D. research consists of three parts: i) Experimental ii) Process design and simulation iii) Process Optimization. In the experimental part of my research, I worked on pretreatment of mixed lignocellulosic residue. Use of mixed lignocellulosic residue makes biorefinery concept viable in an arid region where a single residue is not able to sustain an industrial-scale biorefinery. In the process simulation and design part, I developed process simulation and techno-economic models of various sections of the biorefining process. In process optimization part I worked on developing and implementing a mathematical framework to optimize the biorefinery network consisting of the model developed in part 2.My M.Sc. research at the American University of Sharjah was focused on process design and optimization. I worked on the optimization of p-xylene production toluene and refrigeration process of natural gas. I also worked as a teaching assistant as a part-time job. I conducted tutorials and labs training for undergraduates in the department of chemical engineering. I have one year experience working as a process engineer at Lotte Chemicals Pakistan Ltd; a Purified Terephthalic Acid plant.
