I have been working in public education for over 30 years, driven by the belief that all children have the right to a high-quality education and that our public education system fails to deliver equitable academic opportunity to far too many children from historically marginalized communities.During my career, I have worked at several successful schools in some of Los Angeles's most challenged neighborhoods. After 12 years in the classroom and seeing first-hand that we could help children from the most challenging neighborhoods achieve academic success, I spent two years in the Building Excellent Schools fellowship, traveling the country and doing deep dive studies of many of the most successful urban schools to determine what the common elements are that lead to success. I used my learning to design, found, and lead a charter school serving the Boyle Heights community of Los Angeles. I have developed a broad understanding of every aspect of running a successful school and the interdependence between all the moving pieces.
