Dew continues his practice in the areas of tax law, business law and finance, and estate planning and estate settlement.
On June 1, 2001, I became the resident principal in the Ann Arbor office of Berry Moorman P.C., a business and tax law firm with offices in Detroit, Birmingham and Ann Arbor. I also served on the Firm’s Executive Committee and Compensation Committee. In addition, I continued to concentrate my practice in the areas of tax, estate planning and estate settlement.
In September 1999, I accepted a position as a partner with Wise & Marsac, a litigation-oriented firm that is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. I was the senior estate planning and tax partner for the firm until it merged with Williams Mullen Clark & Dobbins, a Richmond, Virginia law firm in 2001.
When the Harris, Lax firm split up, I became the tax and business law partner in this second-generation Ann Arbor firm, with responsibility for the firm’s tax and estate planning practice. In addition, I served as the firm’s Chief Operating Officer.
When my prior firm left the downtown Ann Arbor area, I was invited to become the tax partner for this firm, with responsibility for development of the estate planning and trust practice of the firm, as well as providing tax and business counsel to clients of the firm.
Upon leaving the Ann Arbor Trust Company, I served as a practicing attorney in a small law firm with a general civil practice.
While employed in the Trust Department of the Ann Arbor Trust Company (now KeyBank, Michigan), my duties included all phases of administration of approximately 150 probate estates and trusts. Also, I gained extensive experience in personal trust administration, charitable (tax) planning and new business development.
While employed at the IRS, I was responsible for collection of unpaid federal taxes of all kinds, miscellaneous investigations, preparation of tax returns, and asset valuation. When I transferred to the Audit Division in 1971, I conducted field and offices examination of federal Estate and Gift Tax Returns; and my duties included legal research and writing, document review, and negotiation with estate representatives regarding tax audit issues.
