About Christopher Santos
I am a nontraditional student in Purdue University's Multidisciplinary Engineering program with a focus on Systems Engineering.Returning to school in my late 20s, I spent a few years figuring out exactly what it is I wanted to do for a career. Due to my passion for space, I originally thought to attend Purdue for Aerospace Engineering. However, I realized that I did not want to be an aerospace engineer and that my strengths and interests were actually in Systems Engineering applied to Space Systems. Though Purdue does not have an undergraduate Systems Engineering program, it does have a unique program called Multidisciplinary Engineering which allows students to tailor their academic pathway to meet their specific career goals. Through MDE I have been able to concentrate my elective and selective coursework on systems and diversified fields of engineering study for a systems-focused multidisciplinary engineering educational experience. I have been able to apply systems engineering and system-of-systems engineering methodologies to multiple projects including analysis and modeling for the Earth-Moon architecture. I have also had the opportunity to lead several multidisciplinary engineering teams on projects ranging from multi-function robotics to solar power integration for energy independence. I have been able to gain experience with Model Based Systems Engineering and have earned a Systems Certification through the Purdue Systems Collaboratory. In addition to my broad engineering skillset and knowledge base, I bring with me strong interpersonal and leadership skills, a level of maturity and focus beyond that of your typical undergraduate engineering student, and a deep passion for Space Systems and Systems Engineering.

Committee Member
CurrentI am a founding committee member for the City of Lafayette Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.I played an integral role in designing city infrastructure in the form of lane striping. My implemented design solved many issues and concerns in a very pragmatic way. The prominent complaints were (1) vehicles drove far too fast endangering pedestrians and cyclists, (2) there were no bike lanes to keep cyclists safer, (3) the entries and exits from side roads were often accident sites with other vehicles and pedestrians due to the general traffic flow, (4) parking was limited for a large section that was important to businesses along the street, and (5) crosswalks were poorly marked endangering pedestrians legally crossing. My design shrunk the lane size which naturally slowed down traffic, added a dedicated and well-marked bike lane in a manner that did not disrupt the natural flow of traffic, marked pedestrian crossing with far greater visibility, and added additional parking opposite to the bike lane on the side where businesses were located which doubled to force cars making turns onto side streets to be unable to apex the turn and slow down in the process. Future plans are geared towards improving the relationship between the community, pedestrians, and cyclists, and also to add accessibility to hot spots for both low income communities who rely on bicycle or pedestrian transportation while improving the city trail system. We work closely with other public service entities such as the Lafayette Police Department, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, etc. to ensure project efficiency and to eliminate potential conflicts that might impede project development and implementation.
Founder/Team Manager
Rule Five Racing is a domestic amateur bicycle racing team. As the team manager, I start by conceptualizing the season goals for the team and develop a flexible logistical roadmap to realize those goals with multiple contingency plans. Then I create appointed positions for team members in order to optimize the team functionality, and appoint team members who can effectively fulfill certain roles given their strengths. Next I work with team members to develop personalized race programs which helps them accomplish their personal goals while also meeting the team goals. Lastly I will monitor the progress, behavior, and general health of each rider and make sure to adjust throughout the season to make sure the rider's well-being is cared for and to keep them on track with their programs. In addition to this process, I also create all documents and files including rider and sponsor contracts, rider and sponsor trackers and contact files, annual newsletters, and partnership program packets for potential sponsors. Other responsibilities include setting and managing the annual budget, building a rapport with potential sponsors and negotiating sponsorship agreements, maintaining a positive relationship with our sponsors, and leading team community outreach efforts.
Mechanic And Sales
My employment at Hodson's Bay Company, a bicycle store with a full-service repair shop, consisted of two primary roles - bike mechanic and sales - and two secondary roles - community outreach and design. As a mechanic I was responsible for diagnosing mechanical problems with customer's bikes, providing customers with options and recommendations for actions to take with regards to their bikes, and servicing and repairing bikes. This required me to be educated on old, current, and emerging technology in the bicycle industry, and to also understand how each technology works. I also needed to have a strong mechanical understanding of the systems on a bicycle and how to properly repair them. Additionally, not all problems had simple solutions. It was imperative that I was able to apply critical analysis and creative problem solving to abnormal cases. In sales I was responsible for staying up to date on product knowledge of all brands that we carried and other competing brands. I needed to know how to properly size and fit people to bikes, and it was imperative that I built a positive relationship with the customer so that we could retain their patronage beyond the purchasing process. For community outreach I was responsible for being the face of the shop in and out of the workplace. I was to actively help at community events representing Hodson's Bay Company. Additionally, I sat on the City of Lafayette Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee as a representative of Hodson's Bay Company, and also the racing team I manage, Rule Five Racing.Lastly, with design I was tasked with rebranding. Though I was given less freedom in that regard, I designed coupons and fliers for events and redesigned the logo that was used until ownership changed.
Mathematics Tutor
As a mathematics tutor I had three key responsibilities. First was to tutor students on various mathematical subjects such as algebra, geometry, statistics, trigonometry, arithmetic, and calculus. Second, I helped students improve study habits and used creative methods to improve each student’s individual performance. Lastly, I designed personalized education plans for each student seeking assistance in order to cater to their specific needs, strengths, and weaknesses of the student, and helped students implement their respective plans.
Corporate Training Manager
Kainos Partners LLC was a franchisee group with 54 Dunkin Donuts locations. I was responsible for managing the certified training location and another retail location. The certified training location was selected as a training location for all Dunkin Donuts in Western New York, achieved by maintaining and exceeding high standards in customer service, store efficiency, product quality, location cleanliness, and employee training. As the manager of a retail location, my responsibilities included hiring, training, and managing associates and shift managers, scheduling, quality assurance, shipping and receiving, financial management, and store productivity. As the corporate training manager I was responsible for training new associates and managers in customer service, state and federal food service regulations, food and drink preparation, quality control, money handling, and company policies. I also had to train new managers and franchise owners in inventory management, effective leadership, financial management, staff hiring and scheduling, minimizing employee turnover, and maximizing customer satisfaction and location profit.
