Philippe Charles and I are the co-founders of a new software venture: HARDBOL Software. Our goal is to strengthen gplv3-licensed Macro SPITBOL. We will also do hard stuff for our clients using the SPITBOL platform. I am CEO, Philippe CTO.We're busy coding now, first doing port to OS X, then moving on to adding full UNICODE support to Macro SPITBOL.
I have been a member of the open-source community since I began working with Philippe Charles on Jikes, IBM's first open-source project.
I worked with a colleage to manage open-source activites for the LTC and the rest of IBM's System & Technology Group (STG).I was a member of the LTC Tech Board, IBM's most senior group of LInux technical experts, with responibility for LTC strategy and budgeting, as well as for advice on IBM's Linux strategy and its execution worldwide, for all divisions.
I was one of three developers/project-manages who worked with three IBM's attorneys to manage IBM's open-source review and approval process worldwide, for all divisions.I was also a member of the Strategy team for Software Group (SWG). As part of that I helped prepare a study on the effects of commoditization on the commercial software industry.I also made two trips to Russia to help build SWG's relationship with "LETI," a major university in St. Petersburg. (I speak Russian, not fluently, but enough to get by.)
1987-2002:: Research Staff Member, IBM Research2003-2009: Member of team managing IBM's open-source activitities worldwide
Philippe Charles and I are the co-authors of Jikes, a plug-compatible replacement for Sun's Javac source to bytecode compiler that is from 10-50 times faster than Javac.I led the effort that resulted in IBM releasing Jikes as its first open-source project, and I led that work for a year. Jikes received a major award for that work. As one senior exec said, "Jikes was featured in virtually *every* presentation given by IBM on open-source and/or Linux for all of 1999.Jikes was the first project from IBM to be included in a major Linux distribution (RedHat), and can now be found in almost all of them.
