Across two labs, I have had the sublime opportunity to work in research-level organic synthesis over the past two years. Cross couplings, lithium-halogen exchanges, and catalyst design are all intrinsically interesting activities to do between neuroscience lectures. While the principals of chemistry and neuroscience are an art in their own right, I also deeply care about the way in which they impact our society. I engage in harm reduction in many different contexts, to try and heal the toxic relationship our society has formed with certain synthetic and natural products. It is key to understand the culture, not just pharmacology or synthesis, if we are going to design experiences to promote mental healing. In a different tangent of my life, I spent my formative years in Africa, learning and working at the intersection of indigenous justice, natural land conservation, and tourism.
