I was, for a long period, the main linguist for highest ranking officers of the task force, ensuring accurate simultaneous interpretation between them, foreign military, ambassadors and similar staff. Lived in very austere conditions, given that the linguists on camp were housed in crowded "T- Compound" Still, another "fun" year in one of Africa's hottest climates.

Planned future operations of MISO by identifying best potential missions in coordination with Civil Affairs (CA) planners. Built strong relations with all CA staff which multiplied the number of missions for MISO throughout East Africa. Regularly aided the Strategic Communications Team with input and knowledge of Francophone Africa. Appointed Liaison Officer (LNO) to French (FFDj). Coordinated joint events involving soldiers/sailors/marines of both countries, but more often, planned and enabled countless meetings for ranking officers and often between the US Admiral and French General. Assisted State Dept.staff and US security personnel with relations with French military and 100% of their access to Camp Lemonnier. Provided linguistic and expert support and FFDj coordination to US air assets and ACOTA (Training) staff in Djibouti. Translated operation plans, memos and binding agreements and provided much simultaneous interpretation.

Led 27 soldiers (instructors). My company planned and conducted all Psychological Operations training for units deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq and Horn of Africa. Responsible for success of soldier training on radio equipment, TIGR (web-based reporting) and other specific skills. Coordinated with diverse US Army units and oversaw unit's operations at Ft. Hunter Liggett. Ensured support for our sister mission of Civil Affairs training and also meeting the emerging need for geopolitical study and cultural skills for these professionals.

Camp Victory, Iraq 09342.

Led and mentored 14 Soldiers in effective influence techniques and readiness for a combat zone in pre/post-deployment training. In Iraq, ensured performance and safety of HQ operations staff positive control of small facility to include weapons, 'hi-dollar' technology, classified computers. Ensured a near paperless environment. Trained subordinates on office equipment. Conducted daily briefs. Due to extensive experience with Arabs, was key in ensuring communications between contract local advisers and project personnel. Compiled two essential daily reports that went to higher echelons. Ensured regular commmunications to our teams in the field. Attached for several weeks to the MNF-Iraq Information Operations (IO ) leadership as Battle Captain at Joint Ops Center/ Faw Palace due to personnel shortage. Became expert on current operations; took charge of briefing the JOC/Ops Center on salient IO details and answered numerous inquires for the 12 (night) hours. Conducted extensive research of translated Iraqi media each night and summarized potential issue areas and highlights for IO Chief & MNF-I Chief of Staff. Accomplished all various tasks with which the MNF IO Chief charged me.

I led and managed a proficient US Army HR Team and was responsible for the quality of HR actions for all the unit's soldiers located throughout two states. Significantly improved unit statistics by improved tracking of evaluations and by legally separating those fully inactive. Initiated creation of a language lab for the HQ (now functioning) and ensured language qualification maintenance and training for linguists and those programmed for overseas. Personally aided officers and soldiers with French language progress as formal training was not budgeted.

I taught all aspects of academic English to Saudi officers so they could attend various military schools in the USA. A 12-month class cycle demanded thorough planning and class time maximization. Used various methods to teach myself very basic, polite Arabic, which was great for rapport building. Aided students with all CALL (Computer-Aided language Learning) technology integration into learning.

During this time, I acted mostly as a contract ( and private) instructor of English and French in the Sapporo area. Top clients included IBM executives, the Kaihatsu Doboku Engineering Agency and local MacDonalds franchises for whom I led English discovery sessions as well as teaching basic US business culture. Taught spoken English at Rusutsu High School (2001-02) and at Sapporo Business Academy (1997-2001) where I worked closely with native Japanese team teachers. Taught myself to speak "working" Japanese. Usually created original, varied class materials to make learning livelier and effective. Competed in cross country ski races and countless 10km and full marathon races around Japan. Personal best marathon was 2nd place and 2:33:26, May 2002 (Lake Toya). Also, regularly volunteered to guide blind runners in races or training sessions.
