Manchester Metrolink Phase 3B is part of the ongoing development plans of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) for the development of a LRT network in Greater Manchester. The MM3B works have been sub-divided into two sections: Accelerated (MM3B A) works and Non-Accelerated works (MM3B NA). I have been working on the Structures team in section 2 looking after for a steel frame bridge over the M56, pre-cast reinforced concrete bridge over Railway and the installation of a pre-cast concrete Culvert in an existing brook. My role as a Site Engineer includes setting out for the structures, being responsible for supervising and providing technical knowledge / construction solutions for the operatives on site and assisting the Section Engineer in their role. I have been responsible for the production of method statements, risk assessments and site specific task sheets. Planning future works, and monitoring site progress are other responsibilities associated with my role. I have developed many CAD drawings for Highways Agency, Network Rail and Environment Agency.

Carlton Community College was part of Building Schools for the Future Programme in Barnsley. Carlton Community College was one of the first schools to benefit from the largest single investment in education in Barnsley. Laing O’Rourke was employed as the main building contractor. The structure was a Steel framed structure with precast panels for the slabs.I started on this site with Expanded Ltd as a Trainee Engineer. At the start of the project he was assisting the Site Engineer set out earthworks, concrete pads, bolt boxes and checking the steel frame. After 4 months I was left as the main site engineer for Expanded. This project provided me with valuable insight into the construction industry. I was fully immersed into the role of working as an engineer, and trusted to work independently and manage other site staff. I was appointed as a first aider on site. During work on site I used various statistical and engineering techniques to handle the engineering projects given to me by my senior engineers. I also underwent training on handling complex engineer.

Hepworth Wakefield gallery is the focal point of regeneration on the River Calder waterfront, formerly the site of a huddle of low mill buildings. It houses a collection of sculpture by local-born artist Barbara Hepworth alongside the works of other prominent artists, and is one of the largest art galleries yet built outside London. As a response to its environment, the building was conceived as a group of ten linked blocks of varying sizes, and is expressed in pigmented self-compacting concrete. The addition of pigment was untried in this country and required the development of dedicated pour techniques to get the meticulous mirror finish specified. This route to achieving the design proved highly cost effective compared with precast options, as well as advancing UK industry knowledge in aesthetic concrete techniques. The two-storey building houses a learning suite, café, lecture theatre and ancillary facilities on the ground floor, with ten gallery spaces above. The various skew roofs of the airy gallery spaces, up to 13m high, enable generous clerestory glazing as part of the natural lighting strategy. The river elevation sits directly above the water. Below, river water is directed through the line of an old mill race at basement level to provide cooling – part of a sustainable and highly integrated building services agenda designed to achieve a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating. A detailed anti-clash 3D model helped optimise structure and services integration throughout. The mass of the building is part of the flood protection strategy for the waterfront area. The structure is founded on a 400mm raft slab on CFA piles. Floor spans are constructed in either flab slab, T-beam slab or post-tensioned concrete, depending on column spacing. The gallery floors are topped with a monolithic 20mm screed, with two-way movement joints at the perimeters. Steel roof trusses support precast concrete planks.
