CurrentIn 2004, Dr. Shaffer was awarded a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant ($10 million) from the NIH for the development of a Center for Pediatric Research (CPR) at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. The purpose of this award is to expand translational research grants in the State of Delaware for improving health care in the pediatric population. In the fall, 2009, Dr. Shaffer, Director, the Center for Pediatric Research program received an additional $1.6 million in supplemental ARRA funding to bridge COBRE funding during the review of the COBRE Phase II proposal.In September 17, 2010, the Center for Pediatric Research, under the direction of Dr. Shaffer, secured an additional 5-year NIH COBRE competitive grant renewal of $9.5 million to continue with COBRE Phase II and in August 2015, an additional 5-year NIH COBRE grant renewal of $ 5million was awarded to continue with COBRE Phase III.

In addition, he is renowned for his work in developmental airway physiology and clinical pulmonary function evaluation in neonates.

CurrentThomas H. Shaffer, MS.E., Ph.D., is Professor of Physiology and Pediatrics, Temple University School of Medicine. At Temple, Dr. Shaffer has experience as an active scientist in engineering, bioengineering, physiology, pediatrics and pulmonary research. In addition, he has extensive industrial and pharmaceutical consulting experience related to instrumentation and drug development. Since 1968, Dr. Shaffer has been continuously supported by ONR (3) grants, NIH grants (25) and academic, corporate and private institutional awards (49 total). The excellence of his corporate-sponsored research has resulted in 12 licensed patents and 8 additional patents ready for commercialization. Dr. Shaffer clearly understands translational research related to bioengineering and instrumentation development having moved multiple intellectual properties from the bench top to the clinic and on to industry.Dr. Shaffer’s contribution to the literature has been significant. He has published 77 book chapters, 282 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and 568 abstracts. His clinical manuscripts have been published in Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine and many more highly respected and well-read periodicals. In addition, he has published basic science manuscripts in the Journal of Applied Physiology, the American Journal of Physiology, the American Journal of Circulatory Research, Journal of Biomechanics, Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology and IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. He serves on the Editorial Boards of three scientific journals and is a journal reviewer for another 22 publications.

In 1972, Dr. Shaffer started as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. Arthur duBois. Shaffer was a scholar of the Pennsylvania Plan and a NIH postdoctoral trainee. He transitioned from a postdoctoral fellow to a Research Associate, to an Associate and finally an Assistant Professor of Physiology in 1976.
