Delivering babies in frozen Eskimo villages under Coleman lanterns; traveling over perilous terrain strapped to the top of a dogsled; performing surgery without adequate anesthesia and under flashlight illumination; even delivering his own son. It was all in a day’s work because I was the only doctor in town. And it was never a question of whether or not I wanted to do it.
