Junior Programmer
My responsibilities as Junior Online Services programmer at Firesprite are wide-ranging, covering both client-side coding in Unreal, such as creating an achievements system to interact with the target platform, and architecture creation within the AWS cloud, such as database creation and management for the stats system. Swapping between languages was a necessity, since the client was written in C++ and our online infrastructure primarily in Python - this is frequently challenging, but I relish the opportunity to utilise more than one language at once. I endeavour to get as much experience in as wide a field as I can and consistently put myself forward to handle areas of responsibility that are way beyond the normal range of a junior programmer. The work that I am most proud of was the complete codification of our online infrastructure in AWS CDK and its integration into the DevOps pipeline. When I joined the project, we were simply using the console to create whatever resources were needed at the time, with no version control or scope for scaling. I identified that this was a rich area for development and volunteered myself for the task of codifiying our infrastructure. I went from previously having never used the CDK before, to codifying our entire infrastructure and integrating it into our Dev Ops pipeline within a matter of weeks. This included automated nightly deploys of our game’s server to match the nightly client deploy, ready for QA to test each morning.Due to my years of experience working in the industry previously, I am able to easily self-manage, utilising my Jira knowledge to create, track and update my own tasks and issues within larger Epics of work. I always ensure to communicate thoroughly with production and management when undertaking this to ensure they have maximum visibility and am able to save them significant amounts of time by managing my own day-to-day activities.
Senior Qa Specialist
My responsibilities as Senior QA at Firesprite included anything from writing test cases for new areas of the game, to managing the creation and deployment of new builds and servers for the team. On the QA team, we were encouraged to specialise in a certain area and work closely with that wider dev team - my area of expertise was to work closely with and support the online services team in terms of testing new features, which gave me a breadth of knowledge in this area which I would otherwise be without. For my own education I also become familiar with various areas of the codebase to give me a better understanding of how to test various features and go about finding bugs - the better your understanding of how a system functions, the more likely you are to find interesting, edge-case bugs. With the skills that I have developed on my personal projects, combined with my knowledge of the processes and procedures that the online services team used, this put me in an ideal position to become a valued member of the development team.
Qa Specialist
I worked as a QA engineer at Media Molecule for almost three years, specialising in audio QA and the creative toolset of Dreams in general. My day-to-day responsibilities within the Media Molecule QA department were wide-ranging. The team operated both as a live service for their current release Dreams, as well as developing future projects in tandem with this. Maintaining and developing relevant testing strategies for all of these scenarios was a challenge which must be met with excellent time and resource management, forward thinking and strong communication, both between departments and within the QA department itself.Content created by the team for testing could be anything from a racing game to a dungeon crawler, which gave me an excellent cross-section of experience across genres. Equally, it was necessary to maintain the integrity of the creation editor within Dreams, as well as the in-house tools used by developers. We were augmented by two excellent offsite teams, who we often relied upon to run large test cases. It was vital to both assist and maintain excellent lines of communication with these teams, as well as keeping a high-level overview of the status and progress of both sites in relation to the current goal.
Qa Engineer
I worked as a QA engineer at Sony Liverpool, primarily on the Media Molecule title Dreams.
Resident Sound Engineer
In October of 2012, I moved on to be the in-house engineer at the residential Foel Studio. This allowed me to broaden my scope both in terms of the artists that I was working with and the scale of the productions that I was allowed to create. It also provided me the opportunity to work with a unique set of analogue gear, as well as continuing the development of my Pro Tools skills. During my time here I have worked with such acts and producers as Alan Parsons, the Vivian Stanshall Archives and Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard.
Sound Engineer
After completing my Bachelor's Degree, I returned to work at Whitby Studios as the in-house engineer. During this time I refined my recording and mixing skills, as well as honing my Pro Tools skills. During this time I worked on sessions including Catfish and the Bottlemen and A-Ha.
