The Youth Farm Leadership is a council consisting of staff members from the Youth Farm and students at the High School for Public Service: Heroes of Tomorrow. Members of the council aim to build and sustain mutually beneficial relationships between the farm and Wingate Campus . The Youth Leadership Council creates opportunities for the Wingate Campus and Crown Heights/ East Flatbush community to have access to fresh, culturally relevant produce. And as students, members aim to extend their knowledge to peers and the community regarding food justice.In the past the Council have initiated a variety of events that have benefit the Crown Heights community and also students/staff at Wingate Campus. These projects have included mind and wellness tips such as yoga poses, and stress reducing work outs As for supporting proper nutrition, the council has held free samplings of proper dietary foods, as well as advocating for the Youth Farm's local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share to members in the community. In recent months, the council has spreading it's knowledge to others outside of the Crown Heights community. From broadcasting on social media, to leading workshop events at popular conferences, such as the International Youth Environmentalist Summit.
Youth Tiller
The Youth Tiller at the Youth Farm is a eight week program that teaches high school students to take care and help maintain a one acre farm on Wingate Campus. In the experience, Youth Tiller do daily farm activities including: weeding, trelising, watering, transplanting, thinning, irrigating, and harvesting. Harvested crops are sold on a weekly basis at a Farmer's Market at the Youth Farm. Youth Tillers help manage the cash register and do cooking demos to attract more customers. Tillers are also exposed to educational workshops on topics such as food processing, diversity in the agricultural world, and much more.
Urban Ecology Research Assistant
Project TRUE is a two month summer program catered to rising high school seniors interested in sciences. While at Project TRUE, teens are split into groups with both a undergraduate and graduate mentor from Fordham University. In these groups, Project TRUE members analyzed the correlation between Lepidoptera diversity and relative abundance with invasive plant species in areas of urban and rural New York. After compiling data, scientific posters were made and presented at Prospect Park Zoo and Fordham University.
