About Thomas Hayes

If you were looking for an aspiring mechanical engineer with manufacturing and real world experience, then you have found your candidate. I believe in going beyond school and books to work in the real world, where modern technology and manufacturing processes are employed across a variety of fields. My manufacturing experience stems from my love of working with my hands, and developed significantly in my time at Leupold and Stevens working in a manufacturing engineering role. In school, I have had the opportunity to do a lot of manufacturing and prototyping and have furthered my understanding of maneuverability while developing and manufacturing prototype electrical vehicles for competition out of materials like carbon fiber and titanium. My experience in the outdoors industry is expansive for an engineering student, as I grew up in the outdoors and now have worked in the industry for multiple summers as an engineer and a wildland firefighter. I have been a long time hunter and angler using various outdoor products and I understand the real world use cases and challenges with those products. While fighting fire, I developed an understanding of the extreme use cases for our equipment and the shortcomings of our tools. My time working at Leupold & Stevens, a manufacturer of hunting and tactical riflescopes, has reinforced my passion for the industry and provided me with an engineer’s perspective on manufacturing and developing rugged outdoors products.Outside of my work experience, I am an accomplished student, both in class and in other activities. I am currently the vice president of the OSU chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, where we coordinate various student outreach and involvement activities, and develop prototype electrical vehicles for the Shell Eco-Marathon efficiency competition. Academically, I am a presidential scholarship award recipient, and I graduated high school as a valedictorian at the top of my class.

Listed skills include Solidworks, Cnc Manufacturing, Firefighting, Computer Aided Design, and 8 others.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Central Point, Oregon, United States

Mechanical Engineering Intern with the Research and Development team at Erickson, Inc. My primary role and project was management of the RND Flow Dynamics Lab as well as development, design, fabrication, and testing to further the Aerial Water Cannon project for use in urban firefighting on Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane Helicopters.

May 2021 - Jul 2021

Student Chapter Vice President

Corvallis, Oregon

I served as the Vice President of the OSU chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers starting in March of 2019, and was an active member since September of 2017. In my time with the club, I assisted the local chapter by organizing and facilitating student involvement events such as Pumpkin Chunkin', 3-D Derby, and various small projects. I also committed a lot of time working with carbon fiber constructing both structural and aerodynamic components of our urban concept vehicle, which we first entered in the 2019 Shell Eco-Marathon competition. During this time, I also worked extensively on redesigning and rebuilding a prototype electrical vehicle with a new carbon fiber structural monocoque body.

Sep 2017 - Feb 2021

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Eugene, Oregon, United States

I worked as a mechanical engineering intern at JCI for five months, primarily working as a design engineer with the portable plants group. Most of my work included designing and modifying existing fixtures and structures on mobile aggregate material processing plants. I gained knowledge of the aggregate materials industry as well as an understanding of hydraulic systems, conveying equipment, and sheet metal design and fabrication.I had the opportunity during my time at JCI to hone my skills as a mechanical engineer by performing calculations and analyses to evaluate product effectivity and component size/power requirements. I assisted in developing a comprehensive plant design calculation spreadsheet that included calculators such as plant cribbing loading, conveyor belt drive power requirements, minimum drive pulley shaft size, and conveyor belt capacity.I had the opportunity to expand my manufacturing engineering experience by developing tooling for the manufacturing floor in the form of certified below the hook lifting devices for the purpose of installing drive shafts in cast crusher bodies. I also worked with the operators to improve product drawings, address production issues, and locate manufacturing and design flaws.

May 2020 - Sep 2020

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

Beaverton, Or

I worked as an intern at Leupold & Stevens, Inc., for six months working primarily in manufacturing engineering. Specifically, my focus was on supporting assembly operations for tactically-oriented, high zoom ratio rifle scopes. I also spent time working with other departments, such as Optical and Quality engineering, developing new equipment to support our manufacturing operations. My general projects and duties included relocating and updating equipment within the final assembly area and primary assembly lines, updating assembly work instructions and tooling to ensure consistent quality builds, and applying the principles of lean manufacturing to reduce wastes and maximize efficiency. My most significant project was facilitating and redesigning the new layout of three primary assembly lines to maximize efficiency, standardize the build process, improve the flow & balance of the lines, and improve access for parts delivery. The project helped improve my communication and project management skills as well as testing my knowledge of lean manufacturing and industrial engineering.

Apr 2019 - Sep 2019

Wildland Fire Supression Specialist

Grants Pass, Or

I served as a member of the WFPA Statewide Initial Attack Severity Crew, the only such crew in the state, for two seasons, followed by a season on the district crew 378 performing initial attack on wildfires. Initial attack often meant that we arrived on the scene of a fire with very limited resources and limited knowledge of fire activity. This job often required quick thinking, good communication, quick analytical skills, and good problem solving. My leadership experience included directing squads of five crew members through various operations, directing and communicating with multiple resources as incident commander and state representative, and operating and commanding my own engine as a single resource operator. I also assisted in coordinating multiple pieces of heavy equipment including dozers, excavators, helicopters, air tankers, and spotter aircraft.I operated multiple types of pumps, such as high pressure Mark III pumps and Honda volume pumps, and established a variety of hose lays. Pump operation and hose lay construction can involve careful thought, design, and pressure regulation to ensure consistent delivery of water across various environments within the limitations of the available hardware. I performed burn out operations, fuel reductions, hazard tree and debris mitigation, mop up, equipment and supply runs and deliveries, and wildland restoration activities as a crew member, squad leader, and single resource. I have employed various fire line construction methods, including construction with hand tools, chainsaws, and heavy equipment.
