Summer Research Scholar

Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand

Assisting with the PhD project: Immunohistochemistry of rTBIs in Cultured Ovine Brain Tissue in conjoint with the Biomolecular Interaction Centre. Here, I aided in development of a consistent, reliable and repetitive methodology for determining the effect of cyclic shear loading on ovine brain tissue. This was done through amplitude and frequency sweeps in a Rheometer, followed by constant strain constant frequency sweeps at the threshold inside of the linear viscoelastic region. This acted to replicate repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries (rmTBIs) on the ovine specimens. After this had taken place, I aided in designing the histology process, whereby the strained specimens were stained to highlight axons and dendrites within the tissue. At the end of this process, we were able to then examine slides of the samples through optical microscopy at 4,000x magnification. I have found being a part of this project exceptionally rewarding, due to its niche realm of biomechanics as well as taking steps towards prevention of long-term damage within human brains. In an ideal world, this research should be able to define specific parameters where the threshold limit for long-term damage for repetitive strains is known.

Product Testing And Production Process Improvement Engineer

Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand

This role required me to undertake a variety of tasks in the sector of Industrial Electrical Engineering. My primary task required that I co-ordinate documentation of all production, development and health and safety procedures at the business. This meant being on the production line myself and deciding how best to convey procedures accurately and correctly to new workers.Furthermore, I was asked to lead streamlining of the in-house cutting and machining line for the linear extrusion bodies. Primarily this meant analysing the current drill press position and usage, securing it to the ground with a concrete drill and dynabolts, ordering and fitting a twin-spindle drill head from Taiwan that met required cutting specs for Aluminium and producing a jig to cut the required guide-tube holes with a consistent degree of accuracy allowing for minimal side-loading of the drill-bits. Once this development was completed, I lead research on a new drill-press and co-ordinated purchase of one meeting the required specifications. My final task was producing samples of the new Energyline extrusion profile to be shipped to Australia. I was asked to design the circuit for eight samples that met the following specifications: can run off both Ni-MH Rechargeable 7.2V batteries, have two separate 12V DC mains supply ports - one for charging the batteries and one for running the fitting (should the batteries be at fault). This role also involved a large amount of hands-on Engineering analysis. I was required to do both Spectrophotometry analysis of fittings, as well as Thermal Testing to determine quantifiable aspects such as the R9 value, the Cyanosis Observation Index (COI) and Melanopic Ratio of the fitting.

My job was to investigate and assist with engineering solutions to specific briefed property projects as required for Masfen Holdings Ltd. Each project was of a unique nature, resulting in broadening my knowledge and skill-set to adapt to the challenge and task at hand. For one project, I researched industrial waterproofing and sealing of a commercial carpark; whilst for another project, I investigated the most effective method of electromagnetically shielding a transformer room, so as to minimize any potential, for harmful radiation transmission throughout the building. As a result of my experience across these projects, I have learned problem-solving techniques and gained skills by researching, assessing these two projects and presenting my findings to resolve.
