I served as the news director at this ABC station for more than three years. It was an honor to work with so many talented journalists committed to serving the people of Southeast Michigan. We achieved many great things during my time at the station but the two most memorable accomplishments for me was the establishment of Detroit 2020, a community focused franchise designed to showcase the positive aspects of Detroit. We set out to not only be the best station in Detroit but rather, the best station FOR Detroit. The second major accomplishment was receiving the coveted Alfred I. DuPont award from the Columbia School of Journalism in NYC for our reporting on corruption in Wayne County government. The DuPont is viewed as the Pulitzer Prize award of broadcast journalism. I am tremendously proud to have worked with so many fearless and dedicated journalists who performed such important work.
I served as the founding news director of FOX17. The station launched its local news programming on January 11, 1999. It was the first 10:00pm newscast in the Grand Rapids market. Over 12 years, we ascended to the top of the ratings, besting other longtime media outlets. FOX17 News now produces more local news in the Grand Rapids market than any other local TV station.While the station and its news team won many awards and served as a positive, disruptive force in the GR media landscape, my greatest joy stems from the friendships that were built and live on to this day among the many journalists who worked at the station. It truly was and continues to be, a life-changing personal and professional time for me.
