I want to be a doctor for three reasons. The first is the nature of the profession: taking care of a fellow human. There is so much gratitude and pleasure to be derived. The second is the field itself. Medicine is constantly growing; there is always more to learn. That prospect excites me more than anything. The third is the prestige. Change is a hard thing to come by, especially as a black man in the medical field. But prestige and respect are powerful tools to wield. My medical journey has led me to a Master's in Narrative Medicine. The program has married my passion for science to my fascination with the esoteric thinking of the humanities. As this stage in my career comes to a close, integrating the study of stories has gone far beyond medicine. It has fully transformed my outlook. It has shaped the way I approach problems, looking for that narrative thread. While I would like to say this trait is unique to me, narration is a deep part of my heritage. Jamaican culture is predicated on storytelling; it is a form of connection.I have found myself at my most comfortable when I am uncomfortable. I look forward to challenges because they push me to better myself in all facets of my being: academically, physically, and socially. To quote my Grandmother, "You do good, you do yourself. You do bad, you do yourself."
