    New materials for photoconversion are required that are low-cost, efficient, and nontoxic to the environment. Single-walled nanotubes are possible candidates as charge acceptors, active light harvesting elements, and as molecular wires to efficiently transport charge. An impediment to their use is the polydispersity in nanotube type inherent to current syntheses. I have developed techniques toward the purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes by electronic type and have performed optical studies of fundamental nanotube properties and properties of nanotubes in novel complexes with photoactive polymers, biological enzymes, and quantum dots.
