About Tim O'Keefe
I am a composer/audio artist/producer, and new media artist/creative technologist. I am particularly interested in interdisciplinary projects that explore the intersection of art, culture, politics/IR, gaming, and technology. The focus of my work has included film score, music production, podcast production, sound design, and interactive installation works using physical computing, proprietary software, filmmaking & editing, and performance. I currently teach a digital media installation course as an adjunct professor at NYU's Integrated Design & Media program, and an Electronic Music Performance course in NYU’s Music Technology program. As a composer I've scored feature films, documentary films, and branded content including , VICE's Right to Die (HBO) & State of Surveillance (HBO), Raw Craft with Anthony Bourdain, James Franco's As I Lay Dying, and a series of artist profile films for the Guggenheim. I've composed music and developed sound design assets for interactive content including Frequency, Harmonix's pre-cursor to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and Gen-Z Media's Treasure Island 2020.I compose and produce for a variety of electronic, indie, and experimental music projects including a music-driven multi-media Daddy project with James Franco and Andy Rourke (The Smiths). Currently I am finishing up on a solo album in addition to a collaborative album with Andy Rourke. My work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Spin, Billboard, Wire, the Fader, Interview Magazine, Vice, iD, Time, The Village Voice, Paper Magazine, and Pitchfork. I have scored film installations that have exhibited at The Gagosian Gallery, MoMA PS1, Pace Gallery, Sundance Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival.I'm the co-founder of Freedom Beat, a research project, website, record label, and meeting place for artists, listeners, activists, filmmakers, journalists, and researchers interested in music of resistance, and the role music plays in nonviolent conflict. “Dawn Bird,” a documentary I produced through Freedom Beat, screened at the Urban Voices Festival in Stockholm in August 2014.I received an MFA in Digital+Media from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and a B.A. in Political Science from The University of Rhode Island where I also dedicated my academic studies to Art History, Digital Studio Arts, and Computer Science.
