Global San Diego (GSD), a project of the Global Energy Network Institute, was developed to promote greater engagement by the public in the international community in the San Diego, California region. As the initial executive director of GSD, Tom managed the development of the organization's website. He now advises and supports the incoming executive director and the GSD executive committee.

Global San Diego is a coalition of six leading nonprofits that have aligned to create a platform to stimulate, encourage, and facilitate cooperation and collaboration among members of the nonprofit community, particularly those sharing an international focus or component. Global San Diego engages and educates members of the nonprofit community in San Diego, providing tools and opportunities that inspire inter-organizational collaborations and synergies in order to increase nonprofit effectiveness and efficiency. Tom was brought on board to manage the start-up phase of Global San Diego and to prepare the organization for public launch in 2015. Working together, nonprofit organizations will be stronger and more effective in fulfilling their missions and San Diego’s stature as a world-class region will be elevated.

The Professional Alliance for Children (“Alliance”), was dissolved in May 2018. The Alliance was a charitable non-profit organization whose mission was to improve the lives of seriously ill children and their families. The Alliance aligned attorneys, CPAs, and Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) to deliver free legal and financial advice to those needy families. Other nonprofits have taken over some of the Alliance's mission and functions.

Four short-term (one-to-two months) assignments abroad to direct operations at U.S. embassies during temporary management staffing gaps at posts. Quickly ramped up to address specific embassy issues, problems, and conditions. Established productive and collegial working relationships with employees to produce budgets and procurement plans, manage logistics operations, and to ensure the continual delivery of high-quality support to the agencies and employees of the missions. Most recently served as acting management officer at the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava, Slovakia, August-September 2011.

Advised NRF leadership and managed government relations to promote science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and to identify grant opportunities.

Directed large and complex management operations at multiple U.S. embassies located in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. Leveraged technology and resources to meet organizational objectives and to improve service delivery. Successfully promoted cooperation and mutual respect among diverse colleagues working in multicultural and multiracial environments. Negotiated multimillion dollar international agreements on behalf of the U.S. Government. Developed and led energized, motivated, and productive teams that consistently earned high marks from customers for innovation, service quality, and efficiency while operating in a frequently constrained budget climate.
