Hello everyone!I am Tommy Young, a Data Steward at BlackRock. I've been with BlackRock since August 2019, initially as an intern, before attaining a permanent position in March of 2020. I enjoy finding solutions to challenging problems of all varieties, learning from and helping out my fantastic colleagues, as well as producing high-quality work with tangible real-world benefits. Since joining the firm, I have been involved in projects incorporating data quality control, data transparency, process automation as well as research. To do so, I have gained a proficiency with Perl and Python by working with established code bases and by bringing new products from concept to production. I have endeavoured to use and develop my skills as a data scientist - primarily through problems of classification and prediction, with a particular focus on using imbalanced datasets, explanability of results and robustness of the cross-validation process.Working for a large international company, with huge diversity in terms of the skills, expertise and backgrounds of my colleagues, has been hugely educational. Within my role, I have learnt to develop in a collaborative and agile manner. More generally, by considering the differing needs and professional profiles of both my colleagues and clients, I have been able to develop skills in presenting to different audiences (data, software and concepts) and in project management.
