Krassel Work Station, Idaho

We do various tasks for the community depending on the urgency, for example we have done CSE plots for the US Forest Service to help them decide about a lumber sale, and we also have dug fire lines to prevent the spread of wildfire within the area. This is an emersion position because we are living at Krassel Work Station, a remote Forest Service area on our off days and are fully emersed within nature during the period of our work.

Combining my skills that I have developed until now, I am further helping our climbers at the Outdoor Pursuit Center (Miami University) have a safe and enjoyable environment to improve on their climbing skills. I help in various locations, from outdoor trips, to team building activities.

Helping youth climbers improve in the sport and learn the excitement of rock climbing. My coaching style focused on educating the climbers about technique and mechanical advantage so that they would have a good understanding of the basics to safely continue the sport in they decided to pursue climbing as an adult.

Assisting graduate students with their research as well as conducting my own research. I focused on sequencing a few well known genes from various species of freshwater isopods within North America to further our understanding of the family. I learned to conduct DNA extraction, PCR, gel extraction, Cyclosequencing, and more on my own.We are currently working to publish my research, hopefully within the next year.

I helped our customers have an enjoyable time while ensuring their safety. Working in various locations such as the ice rink, indoor climbing wall, and outdoor climbing trips. Another aspect of the job was helping the customers have fulfilling purchases at the Pro-Shop. I also helped create challenges for the customers to solve on the climbing walls to challenge them and encourage growth.
