I've learned a thing or three since I decided to pursue a career in management consulting. These realizations didn't come to me in an overnight epiphany as some of my colleagues claim to experience, but rather slowly and experientially over the last 3 decades. Clients pay huge amounts of money for advice that in many cases is likely to fail, resulting in delays, rework, budget overruns and frustration. It's not really the consultants fault, since the airplane seat model (or some say bordello) trickles down from the Partners to the lowly associate to increase utilization, grow realization, or simply "keep people off the beach". What this yields is at best a relationship with the client that's tension filled violating the basic tenet of consulting; be like the client's best friend and tell them what they need to know, not what they like to hear.The worst violation of our craft are those consultants and individuals referred to as "vultures". They follow beleaguered companies around picking through the remains of failed implementations, prolonging the agony and the expense.
