About Tony Webb

The first thing I would say about myself is that I care, a lot. Maybe a bit too much at times but that’s because I love what I do. I want to do the best job I can every day, and I class every day as a school day. Otherwise, things get boring very quickly. I really love people. Being a people person can bring as many challenges as it does rewards. Taking a negative experience, turning it around and finding a positive result is absolutely my happy place. A passion for people comes, at least in part, from my musical leanings. Playing as part of an orchestra, a band or a quartet to me means being sensitive to those around you. Taking visual cues, the sense of community, a willingness to compromise and share ideas and opinions - all transfer to everyday life really easily and successfully. It’s also what led me to become involved with our LGBTQ+ Colleague Network, initially as a member. Having an identity and feeling comfortable in that identity at work is so important to us all, and seeing people like me represented across very different teams and departments is a very powerful motivator. I’m really proud of my tenure on the NHSBSA's Shadow Board, and being a Co-Chair of the LGBTQ+ Network which came with that. I love the prospect of a challenge - fail fast, learn from it and come back stronger could be my motto. Although it’s a little too ‘Management speak’ for me, it does get across what makes me tick. I like to look at what we do and see how we can make it even better. A little change can really make all the difference. I’m lucky to have had some amazing managers and mentors throughout my career. The time, interest and genuine wish to see me flourish that was invested in me has really rubbed off and I always try to return that favour whenever I can. I think it’s clear that I’m a mostly positive person. That doesn’t mean every day is sunny and cloud-free. I’ve had my share of struggles and down times too, and they all go in to making me what I am and shaping the person I hope my family are proud of. But life is short - I want to get as much from it as humanly possible and if I can make other people happy along the way, or make an impact through the work I do, then I’m ok with that!

Shadow Board Representative (Lgbtq+ Network)

Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom

NHS Business Services Authority is the first organisation I've worked for which has a Shadow Board offering. This is a 2-year programme aimed at employees with the potential and aspiration to become a Director. Our Shadow Board is chaired by the NHS Business Services Authority Chair, and our CEO also attends all meetings. Being a part of the Shadow Board gave me an invaluable insight into what it means to be a member of an Executive Board, whilst at the same time representing the LGBT+ community within the organisation. I'd not seen someone who represented me at a senior level until I started working here and taking up that position was exciting and challenging. As part of my Shadow Board responsibilities:* I reviewed and prepared comments and challenges on Board Papers prior to the Executive Board meeting which I also attended. This insight prepared me to eventually produce and deliver my own papers to the Board, and to engage in the relevant discussions at a more senior level.* I contributed to the development of the organisation's Corporate Strategy alongside the Executive Board and Leadership Team. * I worked on my presentation skills and attended training to support my development in that area.* I co-chaired the LGBTQ+ Network and was able to use my experience to further develop other co-chairs and really get to grips with issues affecting the colleagues I represented.Through a combination of the above, I raised my profile across the organisation and developed a new confidence and belief in my abilities. I hope to be able to share more of my learning and successes with my team, and hopefully beyond by working with smaller organisations or charities to provide support where it may be needed to help them grow.

Accounts Technical Support Advisor

Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Working on the Contact Team, I was responsible for dealing with incoming communications and queries from customers primarily via email and web chat. Pooling all of my knowledge gained from the telephone helpline, I offered support to customers in written form in addition to offering telephone based and remote support where appropriate. I also helped with answering technical queries received on the Sage social media sites including Twitter and Facebook. I developed a process to deal with mail returned from customers for various reasons which involved liaising with various departments and making new contacts in other business areas. In developing this process, I created materials for other members of staff to use to ensure consistency and adherence to the Data Protection Act. Training other staff members and liaising with managers to involve their teams when there is a bulk of mail received was my responsibility. I fully supported:Sage Instant Accounts (and Instant Accounts Plus)Sage 50 Accounts (all variants)Sage Drive and the associated business apps for iPhone/iPad and Android devicesSage 50 CIS (Construction Industry Scheme add-on)Small business applications such as Sage Start-Up and Sage Planning for BusinessIn addition to this, I provided coaching and feedback to other members of my team to help improve our overall performance and customer experience. As part of the Corporate and Social Responsibility function at Sage, I have donated time to local causes most recently in transforming a garden for a local primary school. I found this to be a very rewarding and positive experience which gave me the opportunity to step outside my usual role and do something completely different. I look forward to doing more of the same in future schemes.
